Form and conduct of examinations

Notices by Faculty Boards, or other bodies concerned, of changes to the form and conduct of certain examinations to be held in 2017–18, by comparison with those examinations in 2016–17, are published below. Complete details of the form and conduct of all examinations are available from the Faculties or Departments concerned.

Engineering Tripos, 2018

The Faculty Board of Engineering gives notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2018, the form of the examinations for certain papers of the Engineering Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part IIa

3B2. Integrated digital electronics

This year’s examination paper will contain questions on hardware description language (HDL) programmable logic design. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

3E11. Environmental sustainability and business

The examination will consist of a one-and-a-half-hour written examination. Candidates will be asked to answer not more than two questions from a choice of three.

3F3. Statistical signal processing

This paper was previously known as Signal and pattern processing. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

4D8. Prestressed concrete

Candidates will be required to answer all three set questions. Question 1 will carry twice as many marks as each of Questions 2 and 3. This year’s paper will not be divided into sections. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

Part IIb

4B13. Electronic sensors and instrumentation

The examination will consist of a one-and-a-half-hour written examination. Candidates will be asked to answer not more than three questions from a choice of four.

4B19. Renewable electrical power

This year’s examination paper will contain a selection of questions taken from the following topics: overview of renewable electricity sources; onshore and offshore large-scale wind power; hydroelectricity and tidal barrages; grid integration of electrical renewables; economics of renewables; theory and application of solar photovoltaic cells. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

4B23. Optical fibre communication

The examination will consist of a one-and-a-half-hour written examination. Candidates will be asked to answer not more than two questions from a choice of three.

4D8. Prestressed concrete

Candidates will be required to answer all three set questions. Question 1 will carry twice as many marks as each of Questions 2 and 3. This year’s paper will not be divided into sections. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

4F10. Deep learning and structured data

This paper was previously known as Statistical pattern processing. Candidates will be asked to answer not more than three questions from a choice of four. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

4F14. Computer systems

The examination will consist of a one-and-a-half-hour written examination. Candidates will be asked to answer not more than two questions from a choice of three.

4M21. Software engineering and design

The examination will consist of a one-and-a-half-hour written examination. Candidates will be asked to answer not more than three questions from a choice of four.

All candidates for the papers detailed above will be given ten minutes’ reading time at the start of the examinations. All other parts of the examination remain unchanged.

Historical Tripos, 2018

The Faculty Board of History gives notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2018, the form of the examinations for certain papers of the Historical Tripos will be as follows:

Preliminary Examination for Part II and Part II

Section C, Political thought

Paper 4. History of political thought from c.1700 to c.1890

Candidates in Part II of the Historical Tripos who are also offering Special Subject O: The Kantian Revolution should not answer starred questions on this paper on the following topics: A7: Kant, or B18: Culture and aesthetic politics in Germany.

Section D, Specified subjects

Paper 19. The problem of sustainability, 1500–1987

This paper is being examined for the first time. There will be one three-hour examination paper, consisting of a maximum of twenty-four essay questions. The paper will be divided into two sections. Candidates will be required to answer three questions, at least one from each section.

Paper 26. Consumption and consumer culture in the United States

This paper is being examined for the first time. There will be one three-hour examination paper, consisting of a maximum of eighteen essay questions. Candidates will be required to answer three questions.

Manufacturing Engineering Tripos, 2018

The Faculty Board of Engineering gives notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2018, the form of the examinations for certain papers of the Manufacturing Engineering Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part IIa

Paper 6.

Question 3 of this year’s examination paper will focus on the challenges of ‘scaling up to manufacturing’. All other details of the examination remain unchanged.

All candidates for this paper will be given ten minutes’ reading time at the start of the examination.
