Report of the General Board on the establishment of a Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa

The General Board begs leave to report to the University as follows:

1. The General Board recommends the establishment of a Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa as set out in paragraph 2 below. The funding arrangements were approved by the Resource Management Committee by circulation on 27 March 2017.

2. The Board has accepted an academic case from the Council of the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences for the establishment of a Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa, from 1 August 2017, in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology. The full costs of the Professorship will be met in perpetuity by a benefaction of £2.5 million from the Jonathan and Jennifer Oppenheimer Foundation as an endowment to be held on trust by the University, to be called the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Deep History and Archaeology of Africa Fund.[1] The Board has agreed that election to the Professorship should be made by an ad hoc Board of Electors and candidature should be open to all persons whose work falls within the title of the Professorship.

3. The General Board recommends:

I.That a Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa be established in the University from 1 August 2017, placed in the Schedule to Special Ordinance C (vii) 1, and assigned to the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology.

II.That regulations for the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Deep History and Archaeology of Africa Fund, as set out in the Appendix to this Report, be approved.

Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Deep History and Archaeology of Africa Fund

1. The benefaction received from the Jonathan and Jennifer Oppenheimer Foundation, together with such other sums as may be received or applied for the same purpose, shall form an endowment fund called the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Deep History and Archaeology of Africa Fund to advance research in the field of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa by supporting the Jennifer Ward Oppenheimer Professorship of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa.

2. The Managers shall be responsible for the administration of the Fund and the application of its income, and shall comprise the Head of the School of the Humanities and Social Sciences, who shall be Chair; the Head of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology; and one member of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science who shall be appointed by the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science for such period as the Board shall determine.

3. Subject to Regulation 4, the income of the Fund shall be applied towards the payment of the stipend, national insurance, pension contributions, and associated indirect costs of the Professorship payable by the University.

4. Any unexpended income in any financial year, including income accrued during a vacancy in the Professorship, may, at the discretion of the Managers:

(a)with the approval of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Science, be applied to support the work of the Professorship in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers;

(b)with the approval of the General Board, be applied to support teaching or research in the field of the Deep History and Archaeology of Africa in the University in such manner as may be recommended by the Managers; and/or

(c)be carried forward for use as income in accordance with Regulation 3 in any one or more subsequent financial years.
