Regulations for examinations

Human, Social, and Political Sciences Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 334)

With effect from 1 October 2016

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Human, Social, and Political Sciences, has approved the suspension of Papers SAN9, SAN12, and SAN13 in 2016–17. It has also approved the retitling of politics papers in Part I of the Tripos, in Regulation 11, by amending the titles of POL1 and POL2 to read:

POL1.

The modern state and its alternatives (also serves as an optional paper for Paper 5 of Part IIa of the Economics Tripos)

POL2.

International conflict, order, and justice (also serves as an optional paper for Paper 5 of Part IIa of the Economics Tripos)

In the Notice published on 13 July 2016 (Reporter, 6433, 2015–16, p. 758) the references, in paragraphs (b)(iii), (c)(iii), and (d)(ii) of Regulation 18 for the Tripos, to papers for the subject the History and Philosophy of Science in Part II of the Natural Sciences Tripos should have referred to Papers 5 (instead of 10) and 6 (instead of 7).

Examination in Health, Medicine, and Society for the M.Phil. Degree

With effect from 1 October 2017

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of History and Philosophy of Science, has approved Health, Medicine, and Society as a subject for the M.Phil. Degree by advanced study, with effect from 1 October 2017. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Health, Medicine, and Society

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Health, Medicine, and Society for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(a)two essays, each of no more than 5,000 words, one on a topic chosen from among set topics from a core module, and the other either on a second topic chosen from among set topics from a core module or from an optional module; the list of modules shall be published by the Degree Committee for the Department of History and Philosophy of Science not later than the start of the Michaelmas Term in which the course shall commence;

and

(b)a dissertation of between 10,000 and 15,000 words including footnotes but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

2. At the discretion of the Examiners the examination may include an oral examination on the dissertation and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.

Examination in Modern British History for the M.Phil. Degree: Correction

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 502)

The General Board, on the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of History, gives notice of a correction to the Notice published on 22 June 2016 (Reporter, 6431, 2015–16, p. 689). Regulation 1(c) should have read as follows:

(c)two essays of not less than 3,000 and not more than 4,000 words in length, on topics chosen by the candidate and approved by the Degree Committee, which fall within the fields of study of the candidate’s chosen optional courses; the list of optional courses offered shall be published by the Degree Committee not later than the start of the Michaelmas Term.
