In the Report of the General Board, dated 9 May 2012, on the Senior Academic Promotions (SAP) procedure (Reporter, 6266, 2011–12, p. 606), it was noted that the General Board had exercised its authority, following approval of Grace 8 of 25 November 1998, to make some minor changes to the SAP annual procedure with effect from 1 October 2012. These changes included the introduction of a rule permitting a maximum of two applications in a three-year period, in order to encourage applicants to seek advice about the appropriate timing of applications.
The General Board, at its meeting on 6 July 2016, received a paper on the conduct of the SAP exercise in 2015–16 and agreed to enable exemptions to the above rule to be granted in exceptional circumstances, provided that any such exemption has the sanction of the relevant Head of Institution and Head of School. This amendment will be incorporated into the procedure and guidance for use in the SAP exercise from 2016–17 onwards.
