Electronic calculators in University examinations, 2014–15: Amendment

The list of examinations in which calculators are permitted, which was published on 1 October 2014 (Reporter, 6358, 2014–15, p. 29), and subsequently amended (Reporter, 6365, 2014–15, p. 146) should be further amended to include the M.Phil. Examination in Scientific Computing (Paper 6 only).

Rules for the guidance of candidates and for the prevention of misconduct in examinations

The Board of Examinations gives notice that they have amended the rules for the guidance of candidates and for the prevention of misconduct in examinations (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 128) as follows:

By amending rule 3 so as to read:

3. A candidate may take a small screw-top bottle of water to her or his desk for consumption during an examination session provided that no disturbance is thereby caused to other candidates. Except with the written consent of the Secretary of the Board of Examinations no other items of food or drink, or cigarettes, e-cigarettes and the like, may be taken into an examination room. A Supervisor, Invigilator, or Examiner has authority to deprive a candidate of unauthorized items until the examination session is ended.

Mathematical Tripos, Part III, 2015: Amendment

Further to their Notice of 29 October 2014 (Reporter, 6362, 2014–15, p. 88), in accordance with Regulations 16 and 17 for the Mathematical Tripos, the Faculty Board of Mathematics give notice that there will be set in 2015 if candidates desire to present themselves therein, an additional paper as follows:

Reading course: Quantum condensed matter field theory

(3 hours)

The Faculty Board of Mathematics give notice of the following amendment to the papers set for the Mathematical Tripos:

Contest theory – will be open book.

Mathematical Tripos, Part III, 2015: Essay titles

In accordance with Regulations 18 and 19 for the Mathematical Tripos (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 379), the Examiners have published a list of essay titles on which candidates may submit an essay. The full list of essay titles and further guidelines are available at http://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/postgrad/mathiii/essays/essall.pdf.

Candidates are reminded that they may request leave to submit an essay on a topic other than those given in the list, provided that the request is made, through their Director of Studies, so as to reach the Secretary of the Faculty Board, c/o the Undergraduate Office, Faculty of Mathematics, Wilberforce Road (email: undergrad-office@maths.cam.ac.uk), not later than 1 February 2015.

A candidate who proposes to submit an essay should inform the Chair of Examiners, through her or his Director of Studies, on a form which will be provided, by 1 May 2015. Candidates should submit their essay, through her or his Director of Studies, so as to reach the Chair of Examiners not later than 1 May 2015.
