Form and conduct of examinations, 2014

Notices by Faculty Boards, or other bodies concerned, of changes to the form and conduct of certain examinations to be held in 2014, by comparison with those examinations in 2013, are published below. Complete details of the form and conduct of all examinations are available from the Faculties or Departments concerned.

Chemical Engineering Tripos, Part IIa

The Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology Syndicate give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2014, the form of the examination for Part IIa of the Chemical Engineering Tripos will be changed as follows.

Paper 1

Candidates will be required to answer five questions in all. At least two answers must be from Section A, and at least two answers must be from Section B. Section A will contain four questions on Fluid Mechanics. Section B will contain three questions on Equilibrium Thermodynamics.

Paper 2

Candidates will be required to answer five questions in all. At least one answer must be from Section A, at least one answer must be from Section B, and at least one answer must be from Section C. Section A will contain three questions on Separations. Section B will contain three questions on Heterogeneous Reactors. Section C will contain two questions on Bioprocessing.

Paper 3

Candidates will be required to answer five questions in all. At least one answer must be from Section A, at least one answer must be from Section B, and at least one answer must be from Section C. Section A will contain three questions on Process Dynamics and Control. Section B will contain three questions on Corrosion and Materials. Section C will contain two questions on Safety, Health, and Environment.

Paper 4

Candidates will be required to answer all questions. There will be one question on Radiative Heat Transfer, one question on Particle Processing, one question on Process Synthesis, one question on Partial Differential Equations, and one question on Statistics.

Candidates will be provided with the Chemical Engineering Tripos Data Book for all papers. Two-Phase Flow Data Book will be available for Paper 1.

Candidates will be allowed ten minutes of reading time before the examination starts.

Engineering Tripos

The Faculty Board of Engineering give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2014, the form of the examinations for certain papers of the Engineering Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part Ib

Paper 8. Selected topics

The title of Section G has been changed from ‘Engineering for life sciences’ to ‘Bioengineering’.

Part IIa

Group E papers

Candidates for all papers offered in Group E will be required to offer two questions from a choice of three, rather than two questions from a choice of four as in previous years.

3G4. Medical imaging and 3-D computer graphics

Candidates will be required to answer three questions from a choice of four: the paper will no longer be divided into sections.

4D8. Pre-stressed concrete

Candidates will be required to answer three questions (one in Section A and two in Section B) from a choice of five (two in Section A and three in Section B).

Part IIb

4B13. Electronic sensors and instrumentation

The examination will consist of a one and a half hour written examination. Candidates will be required to answer three questions from a choice of four.

4D8. Pre-stressed concrete

Candidates will be required to answer three questions (one in Section A and two in Section B) from a choice of five (two in Section A and three in Section B).

4F2. Robust and nonlinear systems and control

This paper was previously known as Robust and non-linear control.

4F5. Advanced communications and coding

This paper was previously known as Advanced wireless communications. The examination will consist of a one and a half hour written examination. Candidates will be required to answer three questions from a choice of four.

4I10. Nuclear reactor engineering

The examination will consist of a one and a half hour written examination. Candidates will be required to answer three questions from a choice of four.

4I11. Advanced fission and fusion systems

The examination will consist of a one and a half hour written examination. Candidates will be required to answer three questions from a choice of four.

4M18. Present and future energy systems

The examination will consist of a one and a half hour written examination. Candidates will be required to answer three questions from a choice of four.

All other parts of the examination remain unchanged.

Philosophy Tripos, Part II

The Faculty Board of Philosophy give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2014, the form of the examinations for certain papers in Part II of the Philosophy Tripos will be changed as follows:

Paper 1, Metaphysics, and Paper 2, Philosophy of mind

The part of the rubric that reads: ‘The questions marked with an asterisk (*) may not be answered by candidates also offering Paper 9: Wittgenstein’ has been removed.

Paper 5, Philosophy in the Long Middle Ages

The rubric has been amended to: Answer three questions only, at least one from each section.

Paper 6, Philosophy of science

The rubric has been amended to: Answer three questions only.
