Regulations for examinations

Engineering Tripos, Parts Ia and Ib

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 320)

With effect from 1 October 2013

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

The Faculty Board of Engineering give notice of the following amendments to the Supplementary Regulations for the Tripos.

Part Ia: Paper 1. Mechanical engineering

By removing the reference to 'heat transfer'.
 

Part Ib: Paper 5. Electrical engineering

By removing the reference to 'bipolar'.
 

Part Ib: Paper 7. Mathematical methods

By amending the description of the paper to include a reference to 'PDEs' to read as follows:

The paper shall consist mainly of questions on: vector calculus and PDEs; probability; linear algebra.

The Faculty Board of Engineering have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination will be affected.

Linguistics Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 365)

With immediate effect

Regulation 10 of the Tripos has been amended in order that variable subjects are announced one year, instead of two years, in advance.

Regulation 10.

By amending the Regulation so as to read:

10. Before the end of the Easter Term each year the Faculty Board shall give notice of any variable subjects to be held in the academical year next following; provided that the Board shall have the power of subsequently issuing amendments if they have due reason for doing so and if they are satisfied that no student’s preparation for the examination is adversely affected.

With effect from 1 October 2013

The list of papers to be offered under Section C has been amended.

Section C

Paper 7. Foundations of speech communication (Paper Li.7 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

By revising the existing paper and amending the title to A subject in linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper Li.7 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).
 

Paper 12. History of ideas on language (also serves as Paper O1 of the Classical Tripos, and Paper Li.12 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

By suspending this paper in 2013–14 and each alternate year thereafter until further notice.
 

Paper 13. History of the English language (also serves as Paper Li.13 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos and Paper 29 of Part II of the English Tripos (Old Regulations)).

By suspending this paper in 2014–15 and each alternate year thereafter.
 

Paper 14. A subject in Linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper Li.14 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

By introducing a non-variable paper to be entitled Paper 14. History of the French language (Paper Li.14 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos) and by suspending this paper in 2014–15 and each alternate year thereafter.
 

Paper 15. A subject in Linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper Li.15 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

By introducing a non-variable paper to be entitled Paper 15. First and second language acquisition (Paper Li.15 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).
 

Paper 16. A subject in Linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper Li.16 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

By introducing a non-variable paper to be entitled Paper 16. Psychology of language processing and learning (Paper Li.16 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).
 

Paper 18. A subject in Linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper Li.18 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).

By introducing a non-variable paper to be entitled Paper 18. Computational linguistics (Paper Li.18 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos).
 

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2014 will be affected.

Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 377)

With effect from 1 October 2013

The Schedules of papers offered under Schedules B, Ib, II, and D of the Tripos have been amended. The footnote under Regulation 18(a) pertaining to the availability of papers in modern Greek has been amended accordingly.

Regulation 18(a).

By amending the footnote pertaining to modern Greek so as to read:

‘Certain papers will be available at Part II during the academical year 2013–14. All papers except Gr. 3 will be suspended. All papers in Modern Greek as specified in Schedule A will be suspended until further notice from October 2013.’

SCHEDULE B

German

Ge. 2

Introduction to German history and thought since 1750.

By amending the title of the paper to German history and thought since 1750.

Ge. 5

Modern German culture, I.

By revising the existing paper, and amending the title to Modern German culture I, 1750 to 1914.

Modern Greek

Gr. 4.

Crete and Cyprus in the Renaissance period.

This paper will be suspended until further notice.

Gr. 5.

Greek literature, thought, and history, from 1700 to 1900.

This paper will be suspended until further notice.

Gr. 6.

Greek literature, thought, and history, since 1900.

This paper will be suspended until further notice.

Gr. 7.

The history and structure of Modern Greek (also serves as Paper 24 of the Linguistics Tripos).

This paper will be suspended until further notice.

Italian

It. 3.

Italian modernism.

This paper will continue to be suspended until 1 October 2014.

It. 9.

A special subject in Italian culture.

By revising the existing paper and amending the title to Text and image.

Neo-Latin

NL 2.

A special subject in Neo-Latin literature: Sannazaro, Poliziano, Bèze, and Buchanan (also serves as Paper O7 of the Classical Tripos and as paper 27B of Part II of the English Tripos).

By amending the title to A special subject in Neo-Latin literature: selected authors.

Russian

Ru. 2.

Introduction to Russian literature, history, and culture since 1855.

By revising the existing paper and amending the title to Soviet and Russian cinema.

Ru. 6.

Russian culture after 1880.

This paper will be suspended until 1 October 2014, but will be made available to be offered as an optional dissertation for Tripos 2014.

And by inserting a new paper to be entitled Ru. 10. Russian culture after 1953.

Linguistics

Li. 7.

Foundations of speech communication (Paper 7 of the Linguistics Tripos).

By revising the existing paper and amending the title to A subject in linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper 7 of the Linguistics Tripos).

Li. 12.

History of ideas on language (Paper 12 of the Linguistics Tripos).

By suspending this paper in 2013–14 and each alternate year thereafter until further notice.

Li. 13.

History of the English language (Paper 13 of the Linguistics Tripos).

By suspending this paper in 2014–15 and each alternate year thereafter.

Li. 14.

A subject in Linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper 14 of the Linguistics Tripos).

By introducing a non-variable paper to be entitled Li. 14. History of the French language (Paper 14 of the Linguistics Tripos), and by suspending this paper in 2014–15 and each alternate year thereafter.

Li. 15.

A subject in Linguistics to be specified by the Faculty Board from time to time (Paper 15 of the Linguistics Tripos).

By introducing a non-variable paper to be entitled Li. 15. First and second language acquisition (Paper 15 of the Linguistics Tripos).

SCHEDULE Ib

By amending the Schedule so as to:

(i)suspend papers It. 3 and Ru. 6 to 1 October 2014;

(ii)remove the asterisks from papers Ge. 1 and Ru. 2 so as to make them available to all Part Ib candidates notwithstanding the Option offered at Part Ia;

(iii)remove the daggers from papers Gr. 2, Ru. 3, Ru. 4, Ru. 6, Ru. 7, Ru. 8, and Ru. 9. These papers are no longer available for assessment by a portfolio of essays as provided for by Regulation 23;

(iv)to add papers Ru. 2, Ru. 10, and Sp. 15;

(v)insert a dagger against papers Ru. 2 and Ru. 10. These papers will be available for assessment by a portfolio of essays as provided for by Regulation 23.

SCHEDULE II

By amending the Schedule so as to:

(i)suspend papers Gr. 4, Gr. 5, Gr. 6, and Gr. 7 until further notice;

(ii)suspend paper Ru. 6 until October 2014;

(iii)suspend paper Li. 12 until October 2014 and each alternate year thereafter;

(iv)suspend papers Li. 13 and Li. 14 from October 2014 until October 2015 and each alternate year thereafter;

(v)insert papers Ru. 2 and Ru. 10.

SCHEDULE D Papers from other Triposes that may be taken in Part ii

By amending the Schedule as follows:

(i) so as to amend the titles of the following papers in the list of those that may be offered from Part II of the Classical Tripos:

Classical Tripos, Part II

Paper X1.

A subject specified by the Faculty Board from time to time

Paper X2.

A subject specified by the Faculty Board from time to time

(ii) so as to remove the current papers from the list of those that may be offered from Part II of the English Tripos, and to replace them with the following:
