The Faculty Board for Earth Sciences and Geography give notice that, for the examination for Part Ib of the Geographical Tripos to be held in 2013, the papers to be offered will be examined as shown in the table below. In this table, the following terms are defined:
1. ‘Two hour examination’: The paper will be examined by a conventional unseen two-hour examination in which candidates will be asked to attempt two questions from a choice of not less than six questions.
2. ‘Two+1 examination’: The assessment of such papers will consist of a conventional two-hour examination in which candidates will be asked to attempt two questions from a choice of not less than six questions. The papers will be undivided. In addition, there will be assessed course-work to be submitted not later than the division of the Easter Term in the year of the examination. The nature of the course-work required will be determined by the University Teaching Officer responsible for the co-ordination of the course who will provide written details of the procedures which will be followed. The course-work will be equivalent to one question in quantity and for assessment in determining an overall mark for the paper.
3. ‘Two+open book essay’. The paper will be examined by a conventional unseen two-hour examination in which candidates will be asked to attempt two questions from a choice of not less than six questions. In addition, for the Open Book Essay, candidates will collect in person from the Undergraduate Office in the Department of Geography, between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Wednesday, 16 January 2013 a set of questions, presented in the style of an examination paper on Geographical Ideas. Candidates will deliver to the Undergraduate Office, between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, 23 January 2013 one essay in answer to one of the set questions on the examination paper. The essay shall be of not more than 2,000 words, excluding the bibliography. Footnotes and appendices are not permitted, but appropriate references are allowed in the body of the text (and should be included in the word-count). Six additional pages of material are allowed for maps, diagrams, and tables (with brief captions).
