History of Art Tripos, Parts IIa and IIb, 2012–13: Amendment to special subjects

The Faculty Board of Architecture and History of Art give notice that paper 5/6 ‘Art and architecture of the Italian city 1100–1350’ (as announced in the Reporter, 2011–12, p. 718) is replaced by ‘Art, patronage, and politics in central Italy, 1280–1380’ for the History of Art Tripos, 2012–13.

Paper 5/6. Art, patronage, and politics in central Italy, 1280–1380

This Special Subject focuses on five major centres of artistic production in late medieval Italy – Pisa, Rome, Assisi, Florence, and Siena – in a period of urban expansion and governmental and religious change. It will examine the ways in which art and architecture reflected those changes and will investigate both private and institutional patronage, with particular emphasis on the roles of the Papacy, the religious orders, and the civic authorities. It will refer to documentary evidence to elucidate the relationship between artists and patrons, and will consider the phenomenon of artistic celebrity in relation to workshop practices. It will therefore consider in some detail the careers of individual artists including Cimabue, Giotto, Duccio, Simone Martini, and the Lorenzetti.

The Board are satisfied that no student’s preparation for the examination in 2013 will be adversely affected by this change.
