Regulations for examinations

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Examination in Public Policy for the M.Phil. Degree

On the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science, the General Board have approved Public Policy as a subject for advanced study for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course), with effect from 1 October 2013. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Public Policy

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Public Policy for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(a)three case studies on topics announced by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science; each case study shall be examined by a written paper and by an essay of no more than 2,000 words in length;

and

(b)a report on a work placement approved by the Degree Committee for this purpose;

and

(c)a thesis of not more than 15,000 words in length, including footnotes, appendices, and bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee.

2. The examination shall include an oral examination on the work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1 above, save that the examiners, may at their discretion, waive the requirement for an oral examination.

Examination in Biological Science for the M.Res. Degree

With immediate effect

The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Biological Science for the degree of Master of Research has been amended to allow for additional requirements for the examination (including a Multiple Choice Question paper). The regulations have been amended by inserting the following sentence after the first sentence:

The Degree Committee shall, at the same time, specify any other exercises which form part of the examination for candidates in particular subjects.

Biological Science

The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Biological Science for the degree of Master of Research shall consist of a portfolio of research reports, of not more than 20,000 words in total, exclusive of tables, footnotes, bibliography, and appendices, on a theme and of a form approved and published annually in the Easter Term before the commencement of the course by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Biology. The Degree Committee shall, at the same time, specify any other exercises which form part of the examination for candidates in particular subjects. The examination shall include an oral examination on the work submitted by the candidate and on the general field of knowledge within which such work falls. The portfolio shall provide evidence to satisfy the Examiners that a candidate can design and carry out an original investigation, assess and interpret the results obtained, and place the work in the wider perspective of the subject.

The title of the Diploma in Modern English Literature has been amended to ‘Diploma in English Literature’.

The General Board have approved the following addition to the Schedule to Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University:
