Regulations for Examinations

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Economics Tripos, Parts IIa and IIb

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 301)

With effect from 1 October 2011

The scheme of the examination for Part IIa has been amended to allow a choice of papers from the Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos.

In Part IIb, Papers 10 (Theory and practice of econometrics II) and 11 (Time series and financial econometrics) have been included in the list of papers for which a dissertation may be substituted.

Part IIa

Regulation 16.

The entry for Paper 5 has been amended so as to read:

Paper 5.

either

(a)

Analysis of politics (Paper 1 of Part I of the Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos),

or

(b)

Introduction to sociology: modern societies (Paper 2 of Part I of the Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos),

or

(c)

International relations I (Paper 5 of Part I of the Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos).

Part IIb

Regulation 20(c).

By amending in line 2 the list of papers where a dissertation may be substituted so as to read ‘any one of Papers 1–4, 6–15’.

Theological and Religious Studies Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 420)

With effect from 1 October 2011

The regulations for the Tripos have changed. Regulation 18 has been amended so as to introduce a new Paper B6, entitled ‘Christianity in Late Antiquity (to circa 600)’ to replace ‘Belief and practice in the early church’, and a new Paper B9 entitled ‘God and the imago Dei’.

Paper B13 ‘Religious themes in literature’ will be replaced by two Papers B13(a) and B13(b) from which candidates may choose to offer either B13(a) ‘Christian culture in the western world’ (currently Paper B9) or B13(b) ‘Religious themes in literature’ (currently Paper B13). A new Paper C2 will be introduced entitled ‘Creation and covenant’ to replace ‘Prophets, poets, storytellers, and sages’. Paper C4 ‘Religion, power, and political society’ will be suspended until 1 October 2012.

Regulations 23, 24, and 25 have been amended so as to debar candidates for Part IIa of the Tripos from offering both Papers B13(a) and B13(b).

In addition, Regulations 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27 have been amended so as to prohibit explicitly the taking of more than one language paper in the same language in each of Parts IIa and IIb of the Tripos.

Regulation 18.

Group B

By amending the title of Paper B6 from ‘Belief and practice in the early church’, to ‘Christianity in Late Antiquity (to circa 600)’.

By amending the title of Paper B9 from ‘Christian culture in the western world’, to ‘God and the imago Dei’.

By removing Paper B13 (Religious themes in literature) and replacing the paper with two papers entitled: B13(a) ‘Christian culture in the western world’ and B13(b) ‘Religious themes in literature’.

Group C

By amending the title of Paper C2 from ‘Prophets, poets, storytellers, and sages’, to ‘Creation and covenant’.

By suspending Paper C4 (Religion, power, and political society) until 1 October 2012.

Regulation 23.

By inserting a third and fourth proviso within the regulation so as to read:

(iii)a candidate may only offer one of Papers B13(a) and B13(b);

(iv)not more than one paper in the same language may be offered.

Regulation 24.

By inserting a fourth and fifth proviso within the regulation so as to read:

(iv)a candidate may only offer one of Papers B13(a) and B13(b);

(v)not more than one paper in the same language may be offered.

Regulation 25.

By inserting a fifth and sixth proviso within the regulation so as to read:

(v)a candidate may only offer one of Papers B13(a) and B13(b);

(vi)not more than one paper in the same language may be offered.

Regulation 26.

By inserting a fifth proviso within the regulation so as to read:

(v)not more than one paper in the same language may be offered.

Regulation 27.

By inserting a sixth proviso within the regulation so as to read:

(vi)not more than one paper in the same language may be offered.

The Faculty Board of Divinity have confirmed that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2012 will be affected by these changes.

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

With effect from 1 October 2011

The details for Papers B6, B9, B13, C1B, and C2 have been amended so as to read:

Paper B6. Christianity in Late Antiquity (to circa 600)

This paper is concerned with the main historical and theological developments in Christianity in Antiquity set within the social, historical, political, and cultural contexts of the Roman Empire and its immediate successors.

Paper B9. God and the imago Dei

This paper is concerned with three central loci of Christian systematic theology: the doctrine of the Trinity, the doctrine of God and the imago Dei, as well as the way in which these doctrines intersect.

Paper B13(a). Christian culture in the western world

This paper will be concerned with the study of an aspect of the cultural formation and impact of Christian belief and practice, specified from time to time by the Faculty Board. This paper shall be examined by the submission of two essays in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20.

Paper B13(b). Religious themes in literature

This paper will consider religious themes in literature connected to a set topic, to be announced by the Faculty Board at the end of the Easter Term preceding the year in which the paper is taught. The paper shall be examined by a portfolio of six essays in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20.

Paper C1. Advanced languages and texts

B. Greek

This paper will contain (i) passages for translation, and for textual, grammatical, exegetical, and theological comment from such portions of text as the Faculty Board will from time to time prescribe, and (ii) passages for unseen translation from texts of similar provenance.

Paper C2. Creation and covenant

This paper will examine from the perspective of biblical theology, as well as a historical perspective, the twin themes of creation and covenant in the Hebrew Bible. Through close textual analysis the relationship between these themes will be studied, and their role in contemporary biblical theologies, both Jewish and Christian, will be explored.
