Election of Student Members of Faculty Boards and other bodies: Notice

The General Board give notice that they have agreed to amend the regulations for election of student members of Faculty Boards and other bodies as set out below. The amendments give Faculty Boards authority to determine locally the most appropriate arrangements for voting, and in particular will allow voting to be conducted online. The Board’s Education Committee has, for a number of years, been concerned at the low student turn out in Faculty Board elections. The changes to the voting arrangements are made following a pilot conducted in 2010 in which a number of Faculty Boards conducted their student elections online though the CUSU voting portal. The response from participating Boards was overwhelmingly positive in that it increased student participation as well as reducing administrative effort and simplifying the process.

The regulations for election of student members of Faculty Boards and other bodies (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 579) have been amended as follows:

Regulation 4.

By deleting in line 7 the words ‘electors shall give their votes in person’ and by replacing in line 8 the words ‘and place’ with ‘and procedure’.

Regulation 5.

By deleting in line 1 the words ‘procedure for the election of student members of any University body shall be that prescribed in the Single Transferable Vote regulations, except that the’.
