Regulations for Examinations

Geographical Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 325)

Part Ia

With effect from 1 October 2011

The examination shall consist of two written papers, both of which will be offered by a candidate. Regulations 16 and 17 have been amended as follows:

Regulation 16.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

16. The examination shall consist of two papers as follows:

Paper 1. Human geography

Paper 2. Physical geography

Regulation 17.

The first two lines of the regulation have been amended so as to read:

17. Each paper shall be set for three hours. A candidate for Part Ia shall

(a) offer both papers; and

Part Ib

With effect from 1 October 2012

The number of papers and their titles and the scheme of the examination for Part Ib have changed. A reference to the course-work required for Part Ib has been included in the work listed in Regulation 25 for which a signed declaration should be submitted. Regulations 18 and 19 have been amended so as to read:

Regulation 18.

18. The papers for Part Ib shall be as follows:

Section A

Paper 1. Geographies of living with global change

Section B

Paper 2. Human geography I

Paper 3. Human geography II

Paper 4. Human geography III

Paper 5. Physical and environmental geography I

Paper 6. Physical and environmental geography II

Paper 7. Physical and environmental geography III

The paper in Section A shall consist of a written paper of three hours’ duration. Each paper in Section B shall consist of a written paper of two hours’ duration together with the submission of course-work; details of the course-work required of candidates, and the arrangements for the submission of the course-work shall be published by the Faculty Board not later than the division of the Easter Term next preceding the examination.

Regulation 19.

19. A candidate for Part Ib shall offer

(a)Paper 1,

(b)three papers from Section B, and

(c)submit to the Examiners, in accordance with arrangements to be specified by the Head of the Department of Geography and by a date or dates to be announced not later than the end of the first quarter of the Michaelmas Term,

(i)an essay, of not more than 4,000 words, on a topic chosen by the candidate from a list of topics announced by the Examiners which fall within the field of Geographical Ideas,

(ii)a record of a practical exercise or exercises undertaken by the candidate, and

(iii)a record of a practical exercise undertaken by the candidate and based on fieldwork.

All items in section (c) shall be submitted together with a declaration as specified in Regulation 25.

Regulation 25.

The regulation has been amended by inserting in line 1 the word ‘course-work,’ before ‘essays’ and by the inclusion of ‘Regulation 18,’ in the parentheses in line 2.

Part II

With effect from 1 October 2011

Regulations 20, 23, and 24.

The regulations have been amended as follows: (i) the number and titles of the papers for Part II of the Tripos have changed, (ii) the date for approval of the subject of a dissertation or a critical review has changed from the division to the end of the Michaelmas Term, and (iii) the form of the dissertation has been amended.

Regulation 20.

The regulation has been amended so as to read:

20. The papers for Part II shall be as follows:

Paper 1. A prescribed topic or topics in human geography I

Paper 2. A prescribed topic or topics in human geography II

Paper 3. A prescribed topic or topics in human geography III

Paper 4. A prescribed topic or topics in human geography IV

Paper 5. A prescribed topic or topics in physical geography I

Paper 6. A prescribed topic or topics in physical geography II

Paper 7. A prescribed topic or topics in physical geography III

Paper 8. A prescribed topic or topics in physical geography IV

Paper 9. A prescribed topic or topics in geography I

Paper 10. A prescribed topic or topics in geography II

Paper 11. A prescribed topic or topics in geography III

Paper 12. A prescribed topic or topics in geography IV

Regulation 23.

By replacing in line 3 the word ‘division’ with the word ‘end’.

Regulation 24.

By replacing in line 2 the words ‘typewritten form’ with the words ‘word-processed’.

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

With effect from 1 October 2011

The supplementary regulations for Part Ia and Part II have been rescinded.

Examination in Finance and Economics for the degree of Master of Philosophy

On the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Economics, the General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved Finance and Economics as a subject for advanced study for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year course), with effect from 1 October 2012. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Finance and Economics

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Finance and Economics for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:

(a)six compulsory and two additional modules, selected from a list of core and optional modules published by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Economics, which shall each be examined by a written paper of two hours’ duration;

and

(b)a thesis of not more than 10,000 words in length, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

2. The list of modules shall be published by the Degree Committee not later than the end of the Easter Term of the academical year preceding that in which the examination is to be held, provided that the Degree Committee shall have power to give notice of additional optional modules not later than the end of the Michaelmas Term. A candidate may not offer a module that he or she has taken in any other University examination.

3. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral and/or written examination on the work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1, and on the general field of knowledge within which such work falls.

Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University: Notice

With effect from 1 October 2011

The General Board have approved the following amendments to the Schedule to Diplomas and Certificates open to non-members of the University:

The following course has been deleted:

Institute of Continuing Education

Advanced Diploma in Entrepreneurship

The following course has been inserted:

Diplomas

Faculty of Business and Management

Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship

The Board have also approved the following special regulations for Certificates and Diplomas offered by the Faculty Board of Business and Management:

Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship

For the Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship administered by the Faculty Board of Business and Management, examination shall be by tasks prescribed by the Degree Committee. The volume of work required to complete the award shall be 15,000–20,000 words or equivalent.
