Antiquarian Society

The next meeting will take place on Monday, 1 November, at 6 p.m. in the Law Faculty Building, West Road. Dr Carl Watkins will speak on Ghost beliefs and the English landscape from the Middle Ages to the Modern Age. Members may bring guests and students are warmly invited.

Philosophical Society

On Monday, 25 October 2010 at 5.30 p.m. in the Bristol-Myers Squibb Lecture Theatre, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, Dr Simon Guest, of the Department of Engineering, will deliver a lecture entitled Tensegrity: the art and mathematics of pre-stressed structures. All who are interested are invited.

At a meeting held on Monday, 11 October 2010 in the Babbage Lecture Theatre, Professor A. G. Smith, President, was in the Chair.

Professor Michael Green, FRS, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, delivered the Larmor lecture entitled String theory – a unifying principle in theoretical physics. A vote of thanks was moved by Professor T. J. Pedley.
