The Governing Body of Clare Hall proposes to elect two stipendiary and two or more non-stipendiary Research Fellows in the Arts and Social Sciences for a period of three years starting from 1 October 2011 or such earlier date as may be agreed.

Research Fellowships are primarily intended to provide opportunities for scholars at an early stage of their academic careers to establish and pursue their research in a supportive academic environment. During their tenure, Research Fellows have no College teaching duties other than to pursue their research. They are however members of the College Governing Body, and may serve on other committees. Successful candidates are expected to be graduate students who have recently completed or who are about to complete their Ph.D. Degree. There is no restriction on age, sex or previous standing, except that candidates may not already have held a Stipendiary Research Fellowship at an Oxford or Cambridge College. Research Fellows are required to live in Cambridge during Full Term but leave may be granted to work away if necessary.

Stipendiary Fellowships:

The Betty Behrens Fellowship is funded to encourage research into the causes of, and/or the ways of mitigating, those forms of anti-social behaviour (including such as result from personality defects and disorders) which cause severe unhappiness to, and/or frustrate the talents or capacities of, those who suffer with them.

The other stipendiary Fellowship is for researchers engaged in research in any other field in the Arts and Social Sciences.

The current stipend for a Research Fellow is £16,377 per year, plus rent-free accommodation in the College or a living-out allowance, a meals allowance, and optional membership of the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme.

Non-Stipendiary Fellowships:

These Fellowships are for researchers engaged in research in any other field in the Arts and Social Sciences. Non-stipendiary Research Fellows will be expected to demonstrate that they have adequate financial support throughout the period of the Fellowship. Non-stipendiary Fellows also qualify for an allowance of free meals.
