General Board Full Review of the Faculty of English: Notice

The General Board give notice that the following Review Committee has recently been established, with the terms of reference given.

Terms of Reference

Under the Education Committee’s rolling Programme of Teaching and Learning Reviews, the Faculty of English was scheduled for review during the 2010–11 academical year. However, a number of considerations have led the General Board to conclude that it would be more appropriate for this to be replaced by a full Strategic Review of the Faculty. This Review will not include the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic nor the Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics. The proposed terms of reference are as follows:

1.to assess the extent to which the current balance of undergraduate teaching, graduate teaching, and research represents an effective and appropriate use of the resources available to the Faculty;

2.to consider the aims, design, delivery of the Tripos curriculum and to evaluate the arrangements for maintaining and enhancing academic standards;

3.to assess the level of student support and whether undergraduate learning outcomes are satisfactory;

4.to consider whether the Faculty’s examination arrangements are appropriate;

5.to review the graduate programme, including arrangements for graduate training, supervision, and support;

6.to consider the relationship between the Faculty and College teaching and assessment;

7.to consider the effectiveness and sustainability of research in the Faculty, taking into account the support available for this and the implications for research of the balance between University and College-paid staff;

8.to review the effectiveness of the Faculty’s current governance structures and administrative arrangements;

9.to consider the appropriateness and sustainability of the current staffing structure with regard, in particular, to the present reliance on College Officers for the delivery of the Tripos.
