Dr Jimena Berni, Ph.D., University of Buenos Aires

Newnham College

GRADUATE TUTOR

Newnham College is seeking to appoint a man or woman to be a creative and dynamic Graduate Tutor. The person appointed will develop and support the College as a social and academic community for graduate students that offers moral support, companionship, and enrichment through intellectual diversity. The Graduate Tutor also takes a key leadership role in ensuring that the College continues to provide the key practical services and infrastructure that help students to flourish in Cambridge. The post is less than full-time and will be tenable only in conjunction with another salaried academic or research appointment in the University of Cambridge or local research institution. The stipend for Graduate Tutor will be 25% of point 57 (currently £46,510) on the University scale (pensionable). The appointment will be for an initial period of three years. Familiarity with the procedures of the Board of Graduate Studies, degree committees, and University graduate programmes will be an advantage.

Further particulars may be obtained from http://www.newn.cam.ac.uk/joining-newnham/academic-posts or from the Principal, Newnham College, Cambridge, CB3 9DF, (email principal@newn.cam.ac.uk), to whom applications (six copies) should be sent.

Applications consisting of a letter outlining relevant experience, a curriculum vitae, and names and addresses of three referees should be submitted to the Principal by Monday, 12 July 2010. Candidates should ensure that references be sent directly to the Principal by the closing date. Interviews for short-listed candidates are scheduled for Friday, 23 July 2010.

DEPUTY GRADUATE TUTOR

Newnham College invites applications from men and women for a Deputy Graduate Tutor to assist the Graduate Tutor in developing and supporting the College as a social and academic community for graduate students that offers moral support, companionship, and enrichment through intellectual diversity. The Deputy Graduate Tutor helps ensure that the College continues to provide some of the key practical services and infrastructure that will help students to flourish in Cambridge. The post is less than full-time and will be tenable only in conjunction with another salaried academic or research appointment in the University of Cambridge or local research institution. The stipend for Deputy Graduate Tutor will be 15% of point 57 (currently £46,510) on the University scale (pensionable). The percentages are expected to reflect an average amount of time though the work falls unevenly through the year. The appointment will be for an initial period of three years. Familiarity with the Board of Graduate Studies, degree committees, and University graduate programmes will be an advantage.

Further particulars may be obtained from http://www.newn.cam.ac.uk/joining-newnham/academic-posts or from the Principal, Newnham College, Cambridge, CB3 9DF (email principal@newn.cam.ac.uk), to whom applications (six copies) should be sent.

Sidney Sussex College

STIPENDIARY AND NON STIPENDIARY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The College Council wishes to make elections to two Research Fellowships, each tenable for three years, to commence on 1 September 2011. One Fellowship is devoted to those scholars pursuing or intending to pursue research in the Arts and Social Sciences, the other to those working in the Sciences (including mathematics, engineering, and the medical sciences). These Fellowships are primarily intended to provide opportunities for scholars at an early stage of their academic careers to establish a successful research profile.

The pensionable stipend of a Research Fellow is £16,629 a year (at 1 September 2009 stipend level for point 22 on the University’s single salary spine), or £19,743 (point 28) if the Fellow holds the degree of Ph.D. The Fellow will be entitled to a room in College and to Fellow’s dining and other rights. Single residential accommodation will be made available for a service charge (currently £1,532 a year), but for those choosing to live in private accommodation there is a non-pensionable allowance of £3,230 a year and a first dependent-child allowance of £874 a year. Yearly increments to the stipend of around 3% a year are payable to Ph.D. Degree holders. The level of Research Fellowship emoluments is normally reviewed annually when the stipends of University and College officers are reviewed. Research Fellows can, in addition, apply for book grants of up to £205 a year and research grants of up to £740 a year. Applications for non-stipendiary positions are welcomed from those with an alternative source of funding.

The holder of a Research Fellowship will be encouraged to teach for up to six hours a week, with priority being given to teaching for the College. Additional payment will be made for this teaching at standard University supervision rates. The permission of the College Council is required for other paid work and all emoluments received must be disclosed to the Council. Council may reduce the Research Fellowship stipend in the light of other income received.

All applications, including references, must be made using the online application form on the College website. The closing date is Tuesday, 12 October 2010, for the receipt of the online application and Monday, 18 October, for two supporting references. The latter must also be submitted using the online form. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that both referees submit the form prior to the deadline. A signed copy of the application will be required from those applicants who are short-listed and at that stage those candidates will be asked to submit two pieces of written work to supplement their application. It is anticipated that interviews for short-listed applicants will be held during the week beginning 29 November 2010 or the week after.

Further particulars and application forms may be obtained from the College website (http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/) and any enquiries should be directed to the Fellow Secretary to the Research Fellowship Competition, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, CB2 3HU (email research.fellowships@sid.cam.ac.uk).

The College Council reserves the right not to make an appointment.

The College is an equal opportunities employer.
