Regulations For Examinations

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Education Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, pp. 307 and 308)

With effect from 1 October 2011

SCHEDULE 1 (SUBJECTS AND PAPERS FOR SECTION II OF PART I OF THE EDUCATION TRIPOS)

Mathematics

The subject Mathematics for Part I of the Education Tripos will no longer be available for candidates admitted in October 2011 or later years. The subject will continue to be available to candidates admitted before that date.

SCHEDULE 2 (SUBJECTS AND PAPERS FOR SECTION IV OF PART II OF THE EDUCATION TRIPOS)

Mathematical Sciences

The subject Mathematical Sciences for Part II will no longer be available for candidates admitted in October 2011 or later years. The subject will continue to be available to candidates admitted before that date.

Physical Sciences

The option ‘Mineral Sciences’ has been removed from the list of papers available for this subject.

Linguistics Tripos (Old Regulations)

With effect from 1 October 2010

Regulation 10.

Group B

By inserting a new paper ‘History of ideas on language’ as Paper 25.

This is a temporary solution for students offering the Preliminary Examination in 2009–10 who would continue under the Old Regulations for Tripos 2011. Examinations for the Linguistics Tripos will be held under the Old Regulations for the last time in 2011.

Linguistics Tripos (New Regulations)

With effect from 1 October 2010

The scheme for the examination for the Tripos has been reorganized to renumber the papers in a more logical way that facilitates any future amendments; and for the arrangements for borrowed papers to be more consistent. The three current Groups will be reorganized into four Sections. A new paper will be introduced in Parts IIa and IIb entitled ‘History of ideas on language’; the paper entitled ‘Linguistic theory’ (currently Paper 11) will be renumbered as Paper 5 so as to allow a logical numbering sequence of papers; the paper entitled ‘The history of the French language’ (Paper Fr. 13 of the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos, currently listed as Paper 16) will be abolished; borrowing of Paper E1 of Part II of the Classical Tripos (Elements of comparative linguistics) into Parts IIa and IIb of the Linguistics Tripos will now be allowed. Regulations 12, 14, 15, and 16 have accordingly been amended so as to read:

14. (i) A candidate who takes the examination for Part IIa after obtaining honours in Part I of the Linguistics Tripos shall offer four papers chosen from Sections C and D.

(ii) A candidate who takes the examination for Part IIa in the year next after obtaining honours in another Honours Examination shall offer:

(a)Papers 1 and 2;1

(b)two papers chosen from Sections C and D.

provided that a candidate who has previously offered one or both of Papers 1 and 2 in a previous Honours Examination shall substitute that paper or both papers by either one further paper or two further papers, respectively, chosen from Sections C and D.


15. A candidate who takes the examination for Part IIb shall offer:

(a)Paper 5;

(b)two papers chosen from Sections C and D, provided that a candidate shall not offer a paper that he or she has previously offered in another Honours Examination;

(c)a dissertation submitted under the provisions of Regulation 16.

16. The following provisions shall apply to a dissertation offered under Regulation 15:

(a)Every dissertation shall be on a subject that falls within the scope of papers from Section C. A candidate shall not offer a dissertation on a subject that falls substantially within the scope of any paper that he or she intends to offer in the examination.

Regulations 16(b), 16(c), 16(d), and 16(e) remain unchanged.

  • 1Provided that in 2011 a candidate who has offered Paper Li. 1 (General Linguistics) in a previous Honours Examination shall substitute Papers 1 and 2 by offering two further papers chosen from Section C.

SUPPLEMENTARY REGULATIONS

The following detail for Papers 6 and 7 has been included:

Paper 6. Phonetics

The examination for this paper will consist of a written paper and a practical component. The practical component will assess competence in impressionistic and quantitative phonetic methods.

Paper 7. Foundations of speech communication

The examination for this paper will consist of a written paper and a practical component. The practical component will assess competence in experimental speech research.

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages are satisfied that no candidate’s preparation for the examination in 2011 will be affected by these changes.
