Clare College

DECANI SCHOLARSHIP

Clare College announces a postgraduate bursary to be awarded for the next academical year to a student in any field of Christian theology who is also interested in playing an active part in the life and ministry of the College Chapel. The award is open to candidates without regard to gender, nationality, or denomination and will normally be awarded to graduates who have been approved for a course of studies leading to a Ph.D. Degree in the University of Cambridge.

The suitable candidate will have a commitment to Christian ministry – lay or ordained – as well as a commitment to the academic study of theology in the service of the Church, and will be expected to assist the Dean for up to ten to twelve hours a week in the life and ministry of the College Chapel. The award, which is designed to act as a ‘top-up’ scholarship to supplement a grant or other means of support, is valued at £5,500. This may include an allowance for housing and meals. It will be awarded for one year in the first instance – from 1 October 2010 – and may be renewed for up to three years.

Further information may be obtained from the HR Officer, Clare College, Cambridge, CB2 1TL (tel. 01223 333222, email sh435@cam.ac.uk). The closing date for applications is 4 June 2010. Applicants for the scholarship must name Clare College as their College of first choice on the Board of Graduate Studies application forms for admission as a graduate student in the University (CIGAS form A, available from BGS, 4 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RZ), and will be expected to have already established their course of study and, if appropriate, their supervisor.

Sidney Sussex College

COLLEGE TEACHING ASSOCIATE IN ECONOMICS

Sidney Sussex College seeks to appoint an additional member of its undergraduate teaching team from 1 September 2010, to contribute to small group teaching and Direction of Studies in Economics. The post would suit a researcher already in receipt of core funding for 2010–11, who is interested in developing teaching experience; the possibility of a term Fellowship also exists, either as progression for the appointed Associate, or from the outset for a more established researcher on a fixed-term appointment within the University.

The successful candidate will be able to teach one or more of the core papers within the Economics Tripos; the College’s direct need is for macroeconomics teaching. As well as benefiting from the support facilities of the collegiate environment (including shared office space, IT support, daily meals, and formal dining), the Associate will enjoy the company and encouragement of a lively and multidisciplinary academic Fellowship.

The Associate is expected to teach for four hours a week during the teaching terms (the full eight weeks of the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, and the first four weeks of the Easter Term): this amounts to 80 hours of contact time. The post also requires the Associate to contribute to the process of undergraduate admissions, including interviews. Most applicants will be engaged in research in the University at post-doctoral level, but other applicant profiles will also be considered. It is unlikely that a successful candidate would have or retain a formal teaching affiliation to another College in the University. A willingness to be involved in the College’s A. Robinson Economics Society and in other subject-related activities is highly desirable.

The remuneration package is variable, as some elements depend on number of hours taught and number of students. The post is non-pensionable.

The Associate-ship may be renewed by mutual agreement at the end of its first year; after that, renewal for the following academical year will be automatic, unless College notifies the Associate by the end of March that the arrangement will terminate at the end of the current academical year.

Informal enquiries about the post, the College, and further details of the remuneration package can be addressed to the active teaching Fellows in Economics, Dr Michael Pollitt (tel. 01223 339615, email m.pollitt@jbs.cam.ac.uk) and Mr Max Beber (tel. 01223 338847, email senior.tutor@sid.cam.ac.uk). Applications, using the Application Form downloadable from http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/life/personnel/jobsitem.html?jid=38, must be submitted to the Senior Tutor’s Assistant, Mrs Maria Booth (email mtb28@cam.ac.uk, tel. 01223 338847), by Monday, 1 June.

COLLEGE TEACHING ASSOCIATE IN LAW

Sidney Sussex College seeks to appoint an additional member of its undergraduate teaching team from 1 September 2010, to contribute to small group teaching and Direction of Studies in Law, initially to cover the leave of one of the active teaching Fellows. The post would suit a researcher already in receipt of core funding for 2010–11, who is interested in building teaching experience; the possibility of a term Fellowship also exists, either as progression for the appointed Associate, or from the outset for a more established researcher on a corresponding fixed-term appointment within the University.

The successful candidate will be able to teach one or more of the core subjects of tort, international and/or criminal law. As well as benefiting from the support facilities of the collegiate environment (including the availability of shared office space, IT support, daily meals, and formal dining), the Associate will enjoy the company and encouragement of a lively and multidisciplinary academic Fellowship.

The Associate is expected to teach for four hours a week during the teaching terms (the full eight weeks of the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, and the first four weeks of the Easter Term): this amounts to 80 hours of contact time. Most applicants will be engaged in research in the University at post-doctoral level, but other applicant profiles will also be considered. It is unlikely that a successful candidate would have or retain a formal teaching affiliation to another College in the University. A willingness to be involved in the College’s Thornely Law Society and in other subject-related activities is highly desirable.
