Second Report of the General Board on the Directorship of the Museum of Zoology

The General Board beg leave to report to the University as follows.

1. In their Report dated 10 July 2009 (Reporter, 2008–09, p. 974) the General Board recommended approval of a procedure for the establishment for one tenure, and assignment to the Department of Zoology, of a Professorship or a Readership which would be held concurrently with the office of Director of the Museum of Zoology. The procedure was approved by Grace 2 of 21 October 2009, and was accordingly put into effect. An Advisory Committee was appointed, consisting of Professor M. Burrows, Professor M. E. Akam, Professor A. P. Balmford, Professor D. Briggs (Yale), Professor N. S. Clayton, Professor C. A. Gilligan, Professor P. Holland (Oxford), and Professor L. Partridge (University College London) with Dr K. B. Pretty as Chair. The Board subsequently approved this Committee’s recommendation that Professor P. M. Brakefield, Professor in Evolutionary Biology, Leiden University, the Netherlands, should be appointed to the Directorship of the Museum of Zoology from 1 October 2010. The Board further agreed to recommend that a Professorship of Zoology should be established, and assigned to the Department of Zoology for Professor Brakefield for his tenure as Director of the Museum.

2. The Board have ascertained that Professor Brakefield is willing to accept appointment to these offices. The Board accordingly propose that a Professorship should be established for one tenure, as specified above for the person named.

3. The General Board recommend:

I. (a) That a Professorship of Zoology be established in the University from 1 October 2010 for one tenure, placed in Schedule B of the Statutes, and assigned to the Department of Zoology.

(b) That Professor Paul Martin Brakefield, Professor in Evolutionary Biology, Leiden University, the Netherlands, be appointed to the Professorship.

II. That regulations for the Professorship be approved, as set out in the Schedule to this Report.

SCHEDULE

Professor of Zoology.     2010.     Zoology

1. The Professorship of Zoology shall be limited to one tenure.

2. The Professor shall be ex officio Director of the Museum of Zoology during his tenure of the Professorship.
