Merton College

STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN MATHEMATICS

Merton College proposes to appoint a stipendiary Lecturer in Mathematics to teach up to six hours a week in full term during the academic year 2010–11. The Lecturer will be paid a stipend of £12,137 a year (current rates) with entitlement to join the USS, and have membership of the Common Room with the right to lunches and dinners at the Common Table of the College free of charge.

The successful candidate should be involved in mathematical research at the postgraduate level, and will be able to teach effectively a range of Moderations and Part A topics, in particular from the Pure syllabus. In addition to her or his teaching duties, the successful candidate may be expected to help with the organization of Mathematics within College, to lend pastoral support to students reading for these degrees, and to assist with Admissions.

STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN PHILOSOPHY

Merton College proposes to appoint a stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy to teach for up to six hours a week in full term during the academic year 2010–11. The Lecturer will be paid a stipend of £12,137 a year (current rates) with entitlement to join the USS, and have membership of the Common Room with the right to lunches and dinners at the Common Table of the College free of charge.

The successful candidate, who should have completed (or be about to complete) her or his Doctoral studies, will be able to teach a number of the following subjects: for first-year students, Elementary Logic and General Philosophy (Metaphysics and Epistemology); and for second- and third-year students, the History of Philosophy from Descartes to Kant, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Mathematics, and Philosophy of Logic and Language.

In addition to her or his teaching duties, the successful candidate will be expected to help with the organization of Philosophy within College, to lend pastoral support to students reading for these degrees, and to assist with admissions.

New College

THREE-YEAR STIPENDIARY LECTURESHIP IN ECONOMICS

New College invites applications for a Stipendiary Lectureship in Economics for three years from 1 October 2010. The appointee will be expected to offer up to nine hours a week of tutorial teaching for New College (or for other Colleges either under an exchange arrangement or in return for tuition fees to be remitted to the College), to engage in research, and to share in the administration of Economics in College.

The principal teaching for New College will be Introductory Microeconomics and Maths for prelims and for the finals papers in Microeconomics and Quantitative Economics in the Honour Schools of PPE, History and Economics, Economics and Management, and Engineering, Economics, and Management. The appointee may also teach any other Economics papers in which he or she has a particular interest or expertise. He or she may be called on to take part in admissions interviews and examinations for the College and will be expected to share in the general supervision of undergraduates studying Economics.

The appointment will be paid on a scale from point 1 (£18,114 a year) to point 5 (£20,387 a year). The appointment will be pensionable under the USS scheme. The Lecturer will be a member of the Senior Common Room and entitled to free lunches and dinners during term and vacation, a book allowance (£536 a year), an entertainment allowance (£180 a year), and a research allowance (£380 a year). The appointment will be for three years, subject to confirmation at the end of a one-year probationary period. There is no possibility of renewal beyond 30 September 2013.

St Catherine’s College

FELLOWSHIP BY SPECIAL ELECTION AND STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN EARLY MODERN HISTORY

St Catherine’s College proposes to appoint a twelve-hour Fellow by Special Election and Stipendiary Lecturer in Early Modern History, with effect from 1 October 2010. The Fellowship and Lecturership will be for three years during Dr Gervase Rosser’s secondment to the Department of the History of Art, with the possibility of renewal for a further one or two years.

The Fellow will be expected to teach up to twelve weighted hours a week averaged over the three terms (twenty-four weeks) of the academic year. He or she will be required to teach at least two of the following periods set for the Preliminary Examination (first-year courses) and the Final Honour School (second- and third-year courses) subjects: 1330–1550, 1500–1700, 1685–1830; the Early Modern General History period set for the Preliminary Examination: 1400–1650; and at least one of the periods of General History set for the Final Honour School: 1409–1525, 1500–1618, 1600–1715, 1715–1799, 1789–1871. The successful applicant will be invited to jointly teach with Dr Marc Mulholland classes on historical methods: Approaches to History for the Preliminary Examination and Disciplines of History for the Final Honour School. An ability to teach one of the Optional Subjects set for the Preliminary Examination or one of the Further or Special Subjects offered for the Final Honour School would also be a recommendation. In addition, he or she will be expected to play a full role in the running of History in the College with Dr Marc Mulholland, including where appropriate arranging tuition, participating in the admissions process, setting and marking College examinations, and the pastoral care of undergraduates.

The Fellow will be a member of the Senior Common Room and will have rights of Common Table (i.e. breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided free of charge on weekdays and when the College is open). The annual stipend will be £24,273 and will be pensionable. A teaching room will be available in College, and there will be a tax-free entertainment allowance, currently £410 a year.
