University Offices

Director of the Melville Laboratory for Polymer Synthesis in the Department of Chemistry

Applications are invited for the post of Director of the Melville Laboratory for Polymer Synthesis in the Department of Chemistry, to take up appointment on 1 October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Melville Laboratory is an interdisciplinary unit, which, though based in the Department of Chemistry, enjoys strong links with many Departments and research groups throughout the University and worldwide. The Director is expected to provide leadership in the Laboratory’s research programmes, and to foster links with other research centres. Candidates must have an international reputation in their field of specialization, which can be in any branch of polymer synthesis. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the Department of Chemistry.

University Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry

Applications are invited from those with an outstanding research background in inorganic chemistry, especially those whose research makes links to energy and novel materials for sustainability/energy applications, which the School of the Physical Sciences sees as an area of future strategic growth. University Lecturer in Oceanography in the School of the Physical Sciences

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in Oceanography to commence on 1 September 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Lecturers (£36,715 to £46,510 a year) and will be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance.

This Lectureship is a key part of a broad and increasingly coordinated research effort in Climate Science and Change across the School of the Physical Sciences. A particular goal is to bridge the existing gap between those working on physical and chemical aspects of climate in the Departments of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), Chemistry, and Geography with observational work on palaeoceanography in Earth Sciences. Candidates should therefore have the ability to use mathematical models as a tool for interpreting past or modern oceanographic observations. Candidates should have an outstanding record of research in a relevant aspect of oceanography including modelling experience.

The Lectureship will be based in one of the above Departments and it would be expected that the successful candidate be able to contribute to teaching and other academic activities in that Department.

University Lecturer in Theoretical High Energy Physics in the Department of Physics

Applications are invited for a University Lectureship in Theoretical High Energy Physics to commence on 1 October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. Appointment will be made at an appropriate point on the scale for University Lecturers (£36,715 to £46,510 a year) and will be for a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retiring age thereafter, subject to satisfactory performance.

The Lectureship will be based in the Department of Physics as part of the High Energy Physics Group in the Cavendish Laboratory. The appointment will consolidate the recent expansion of the group, and is intended to strengthen the group’s existing international reputation in particle physics phenomenology (http://www.hep.phy.cam.ac.uk/theory/). The successful candidate will have a world-class research record in phenomenology and will be expected to work closely with the Cavendish Laboratory’s experimental High Energy Physics Group, currently involved in the ATLAS, LHCb, and MINOS experiments. The post is part of the Extreme Universe strategic theme of the School of the Physical Sciences, building on existing strengths and collaborations between the Department of Physics, the Institute of Astronomy, and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching and other academic activities in the Cavendish.

Other Posts

Secretary and Associate Secretary of the Senior Tutors’ Committee

Applications are invited for the two posts of the Secretary and an Associate Secretary of the Senior Tutors’ Committee, each for a period of up to three years, from 1 September 2010. Applicants would normally be expected to have extensive tutorial experience in Cambridge, and some recent experience of the role of Senior Tutor.

The Secretary and the two Associate Secretaries of the Senior Tutors’ Committee work together to carry through the Committee’s business so that the Colleges work effectively together with the University on matters of undergraduate and graduate education, welfare, and admissions. Each of the Secretaries takes on special responsibility in one of the three main areas pertaining to both graduates and undergraduates; the three areas are admissions, education, and welfare (including finances).

Remuneration arrangements are flexible and the posts may involve either an additional stipend or payment towards secondment from a College or University post. Fuller job descriptions and summaries of the current responsibilities of the three Secretaries may be requested from either of the individuals mentioned below.

Temporary Lectureships in the Faculty of Economics

Applications are invited for two Temporary Lectureships in the Faculty of Economics. One is available for one year and the other for two years. Both are available from 1 September 2010. The salary will be in the range of £36,715 to £46,510 a year.

The Faculty invites strong applicants in any area of Economics. Applicants should have a Ph.D. Degree, or be firmly expected to have a Ph.D. Degree by September 2010.

Research Associate in the Department of Slavonic Studies

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in the Department of Slavonic Studies working with Dr Alexander Etkind. This vacancy has arisen as a result of the award of a 2009 HERA JRP grant (Humanities in the European Research Area, Joint Research Program) in the category ‘Cultural Dynamics: Inheritance and Identity’ for the collaborative research project ‘Memory at War: Cultural Dynamics in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine’. The University of Cambridge is leading this project, which will be accomplished in association with the Universities of Bergen, Helsinki, Tartu, and Groningen. The project will involve multiple conferences, field trips, and publications in which the Research Associate will play a key part. The post-holder will be required to hold a Ph.D. Degree and will have demonstrable interests in one or more fields covered by the project. The successful applicant will also demonstrate a good command of one of three Slavonic languages (Polish, Russian, or Ukrainian), a reading knowledge of another of these languages (or eagerness to acquire this knowledge at Cambridge), and excellent writing skills in English. The Research Associate will be aiming to produce an independent monograph in a relevant area of East European Memory Studies (distinct from the Doctoral dissertation), preferably by the end of 2012, in time for the 2013 REF. The post-holder will help coordinate the large research network of the project ‘Memory at War’ and will be responsible for an interactive, state-of-the-art internet database, which will be mapping memory events across the three target countries in real time. The Research Associate may also be asked to contribute to the teaching within the Department, supervising for undergraduate courses, and assisting in M.Phil. courses and Tripos examinations.
