Regulations For Examinations

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

Natural Sciences Tripos, Part Ib (Plant and Microbial Sciences)

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 384)

With effect from 1 October 2009

Regulation 23(a).

By inserting in the paragraph on duration of practical examinations after the words ‘shall be as follows:’ the words ‘in Plant and Microbial Sciences, it shall be of one hour’s duration;’.

Natural Sciences Tripos, Parts II and III (Biochemistry) and Part III (Systems Biology)

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 384)

With effect from 1 October 2010

The regulations have been amended as set out below (i) to include the subject Systems Biology as a subject available in Part III of the Natural Sciences Tripos and (ii) to amend the number of written papers required for the examinations in Biochemistry in Parts II and III of the Tripos.

Biochemistry

By amending sub-paragraph (a) so as to read:

(a) five written papers, four papers (Papers 1, 2, 3, and 4) of three hours each and one paper (Paper 5) of three and a quarter hours (the first quarter of an hour of which shall not be used for writing answers to questions);

Part III

Regulation 32.

By including the following subject of examination in Part III:

Systems Biology

Regulation 36.

Biochemistry

By amending sub-paragraph (a) so as to read:

(a) two written papers of three hours each;

Systems Biology

By inserting the following examination requirements for this subject:

Systems Biology. Each candidate shall offer

(a)four written papers, three papers of three hours and one paper of two hours;

(b)a practical report of a design project;

(c)a report of a research project of not more than 6,000 words, excluding footnotes and bibliography.

The subject of the research project may be either proposed by the candidate and approved by the Chairman of the Course Management Committee, or chosen by the candidate from a list of approved subjects, which shall be announced by the Chairman of the Course Management Committee not later than the end of the Easter Term in the year next preceding the examination.

Each candidate shall either obtain the approval of the Chairman of the Course Management Committee for the subject proposed, or notify the Chairman of the Course Management Committee of the subject chosen from the list, not later than the first Friday of Full Michaelmas Term. The report of a research project shall be submitted to the Examiners not later than the ninth day of Full Easter Term.

In assigning marks for the examination the Examiners shall take account of project reports.

Examination in Biotechnology for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 504)

With effect from 1 October 2010

The title of the course has been amended to Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

Examination in Theology and Religious Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 531)

With effect from 1 October 2010

Regulations 1(b), 1(c)(iii), and 2 have been amended by replacing the word limit of 4,000 words for the essays and other exercises by a word limit of 5,000 words.
