The Gates Cambridge Trust: Provost

The Gates Cambridge Trust was founded in 2000 from a generous endowment from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It has provided fully-funded Scholarships to over 900 postgraduate Scholars from 84 countries to study at the University since 2001. Between 90 and 100 new Scholars are admitted every year. The Trustees are now seeking to appoint a Provost for the Gates Cambridge Trust to succeed Dr Gordon Johnson when he retires from that post on 30 September 2010. The Provost is the senior executive for the Trust. Candidates must be well-respected and experienced members of the University or a College who can provide strategic leadership to the Trust, be an ambassador for its Scholars and alumni, and able to promote the Trust’s objects to wider society. The post will be remunerated at 50 per cent of point 83 on the University’s pay scales (£99,804, pay award pending) and may be held alongside another University or College office, subject to the necessary permissions. The work of the Provost will require flexibility of commitment and a willingness to travel. An appointment will be made for five years. The retirement age for the Provost is 67. Candidates must therefore be 62 or younger at the date of their appointment.

The Trustees have established an appointment committee for the post, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. The committee expects to recommend an appointment to the meeting of the Trustees on 9 December 2009.

Professorship of Statistics in Biomedicine: Notice

Directorship of the Museum of Zoology: Notice

Applications are invited for the Directorship of the Museum of Zoology. It is proposed to make the appointment at the level of either Professor or Reader, depending on the profile of the successful candidate who will, it is hoped, take up appointment on 1 October 2010.

Hulsean Lectureship: Notice

Applications are invited for the Hulsean Lectureship, for the calendar years 2011 and 2012. The person appointed, who must be a university graduate, will be required to deliver between four and eight lectures on some branch of Christian Theology. The Electors would welcome nominations of suitable candidates.

The stipend is a proportion of John Hulse’s benefaction. The gross sum is expected to be in the region of £3,000 a year.

University Lectureship in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology seeks to appoint a Lecturer to work at the interface of bio-science and chemical engineering. The Department has a particular interest in research that interfaces to healthcare or synthetic biology, but applications from any relevant research field are encouraged.

The successful candidate will have, or will be expected to develop, a record of world-class research commensurate with the Department’s international standing and research reputation. Teaching responsibilities will include contributing to all aspects of undergraduate courses and supervising research students. The successful candidate will be expected to take up appointment on 1 January 2010 or thereabouts. Appointment made at University Lecturer level will be for a probationary period of five years, with appointment to the retiring age thereafter.

Head of Special Collections in the University Library

Cambridge University Library is one of the world’s major research libraries with outstanding collections acquired over six centuries. The Special Collections Division is responsible for the Library’s oldest and most valuable materials, in manuscript, printed, and artefact form. The collections have been gradually enriched by gift, purchase, and deposit since the Library’s beginnings in the early fifteenth century.

The Library invites applications for the position of Head of Special Collections to lead the Division at a time of exciting change. As a member of the Senior Management Team, the post-holder will make a major contribution to the leadership and management of the University Library. He or she will be responsible for the strategic planning of the Special Collections Division and for providing leadership in the development of services to support the twenty-first century student and researcher, in both traditional and digital media.

The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, relevant management experience in a research-intensive library with significant special collections, and be able to demonstrate achievement and vision in the promotion and development of special collections. University Senior Lecturer (non-clinical) in Reproductive Biology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology seeks to appoint a University-funded Senior Lecturer in Reproductive Biology. The primary responsibility of the post is to lead a programme of research in an area of Reproductive Biology. Candidates with an interest in any area relating to women’s health are potentially appointable (including gynaecological cancer and fetal physiology). The primary requirement is outstanding potential as an independent scientist. However, the Department currently has a focus on placental biology, and candidates with expertise in these areas would be particularly welcome.

The person appointed should have a Ph.D. Degree, at least five years of post-doctoral research experience, and a proven track record of publications and successful grant applications. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance with re-appointment until retirement age with appropriate performance. The pensionable scale of stipends for a University Senior Lecturer, not ordinarily resident in College, is in the range of £49,096 to £52,086 a year.

University Senior Lecturer (non-clinical) in Public Health Research in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

Applications are invited for this new position of University Senior Lecturer to work within the newly established Centre for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR), a UKCRC-funded Centre of Excellence in Public Health Research within the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. The Department is one of Europe’s leading academic departments of population health sciences and has a multidisciplinary programme of research.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of, or potential for, leading an independent programme of public health research, particularly focusing on population-level influences on dietary behaviour and the evaluation of interventions to shift the population distribution of dietary behaviour (e.g. by having the following: postgraduate qualifications in epidemiology or public health, high-impact publications, and research grants). The successful candidate will also have experience of teaching at a postgraduate level and be able to contribute to existing and new postgraduate programmes.

The salary will be in the range of £49,096 to £52,086 a year. A suitable candidate with less experience is eligible for appointment at the non-clinical University Lecturer level (salary scale: £36,532 to £46,278 a year).

Post-doctoral Research Associate: Quantum Information Theory in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics

The Statistical Laboratory of the Department (see http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/) invites applications for a Post-doctoral Research Associate to commence on 1 January 2010 or later by negotiation. The successful candidate will be associated also with the Centre for Quantum Computation (CQC) of the University (see http://qubit.damtp.cam.ac.uk/).

The position will be funded through an EU network with nodes at various other European universities. The salary will be in the range of £27,183 to £35,469 a year, and the limit of tenure is one year.
