Applications are invited from graduates of UK universities and/or registered graduate students of the University of Cambridge. Applicants are informed that these Fellowships are intended for researchers early in their careers, and offer an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating academic environment. Any person who holds a Fellowship at a Cambridge College (other than a Fellowship without stipend) may not apply.
Successful candidates are expected to be either graduate students, probably in the latter stages of their research leading to a Ph.D. Degree, or post-doctoral researchers who have been awarded their Ph.D. Degree after 1 October 2008. Candidates who do not fulfil these criteria are unlikely to be considered.
Applications are welcomed from candidates holding a fellowship or other post-doctoral stipend awarded by a Research Council or other similar body.
Applications must be received by 5 p.m. on 1 October 2009. The online application system will open at http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/research_fellowships/ in the week commencing 17 August 2009. Candidates who are shortlisted by the College Council in November 2009 will be required to submit their writings in both hard copy (two copies) and electronic format to the College. In the event of a Research Fellowship being offered and accepted, one of the hard copies will be retained for the College Archives. No interviews are held.
Shortlisted candidates in the sciences will be required to provide a statement on headed notepaper signed by the prospective Head of Department signifying her or his willingness to accommodate the Research Fellow, if elected. This statement must accompany the candidates' writings.
The election will be made no later than 15 January 2010.
Successful candidates will enter into their Fellowships on 1 October 2010 or such earlier date as may be agreed with the College, and will vacate them on 30 September 2013 or three years after the commencement of the Fellowship if earlier. Tenure of the Fellowship is conditional upon the holder devoting herself or himself to research to the satisfaction of the College Council. For the first year Fellows are not required to reside in Cambridge. Thereafter the holder must carry out the research within the University of Cambridge unless the Council is satisfied that he or she is better able to carry out the research elsewhere.
The annual stipend of Fellows who are not full-time students working for a degree or other qualification is at present on the scale of £24,877 to £27,183 a year, provided that a Fellow is not paid other than remuneration for up to six hours' College or University teaching a week. A reduced scale applies to Fellows who are full-time students. The stipend for a Fellow who has other emoluments (other than that for up to six hours' teaching) will be reduced by the total amount of pay received.
Office accommodation is provided for Fellows who do not live in College. Fellows wishing to live in College are provided with resident accommodation at a charge for services and supplies. One meal a day is provided free of charge to all Fellows.
