Gonville and Caius College

RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

Gonville and Caius College gives notice of its intention to elect in 2010 to a number of Research Fellowships to be held in any subject. Candidates should be graduates of, or research students in, a university in the British Isles, and should not have been engaged in full-time postgraduate research for longer than four years, or the equivalent in part-time research, by 1 October 2009.

The Fellowships will be tenable for four years from 1 October 2010. Research Fellows are not permitted to undertake paid work or to hold any other appointment, award, or emolument, without the consent of the College Council; but permission is usually given for a limited amount of College teaching and for occasional lecturing and examining. Research Fellows are expected to spend the tenure of their Fellowship in Cambridge, and to contribute to the life of the College. Permission may be granted for periods of research away from Cambridge. The College should be consulted in cases where a candidate proposes to defer taking up an award until after 1 October 2010.

The stipend of a Research Fellow who has no other emoluments except from College teaching and who is resident in College is at present £19,093 a year, rising by three annual increments to £21,439 a year. Assistance with housing is given to non-resident Research Fellows. A further allowance of £1,292 is payable in respect of the first child. The stipend is subject to review.

A Research Fellow will receive the normal privileges of a Fellow, including the provision of rooms and some meals. Reimbursement of certain research expenses will also be available.

Full details of our application procedures for 2009-10 will be made available online at the following address on or before Tuesday, 1 September 2009: http://www.cai.cam.ac.uk/fellows/rfc/index.php. Prospective candidates should be aware that the College requires the submission of samples of written work (in digital form or hard copy) at the same time as the application; although the length varies between disciplines, it is not unusual for the work to be 30,000 words or more in length.

Applications must be completed by Thursday, 1 October 2009. Interviews will be held in January 2010.
