ANTHROPOLOGY AND HISTORY: FIXED-TERM RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN NON-STATE LAW

Applications are invited for a one-year fixed-term position as Research Associate at the St John's College Research Centre in the University of Oxford. The successful applicant will work with Drs Paul Dresch, Fernanda Pirie, Judith Scheele, and Malcolm Vale on a one-year pump-priming project intended to prepare the way for a three-year programme on non-state law.

The post-holder will be involved in drafting a major research proposal for an interdisciplinary project to develop new approaches to the comparative study of law, with particular emphasis on codified non-state law that remains unexplained by simple notions of state-like power, of social control or dispute-settlement. He or she will collaborate in the establishment of a comprehensive bibliography, drawing on sources from anthropology, history, regional studies, and jurisprudence. The project aims to set up an Oxford-based research network, run a reading group, and organize an international seminar series towards the end of the year, in which the post-holder will be expected to play a substantial role.

The candidate must have recently completed, or be shortly to obtain, a doctorate in anthropology, history, or other relevant subject. He or she should have some prior experience in writing research proposals. Knowledge of German and French is desirable, but not mandatory. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the project's intellectual development and must be able to work independently.

The post is full-time for 33.75 hours a week, commencing on 1 October 2009. Salary will be at stage 3 of the University's Grade 6 for Academic and Academic-related staff, currently £27,183 a year. The post-holder will be based in the College's Research Centre, a pleasant suite of offices in St Giles, central Oxford.

Applications (original plus three copies) consisting of a covering letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and a succinct (1-3 page) statement outlining research interests and experience should be sent to the Academic Administrator, St John's College, Oxford, OX1 3JP. Applications should arrive no later than 10 July 2009. Please note that emailed and faxed applications will not be accepted. Interviews will be held at the end of July.

Please give the names, addresses and telephone numbers of three referees. The College will assume that it is free to approach referees at any stage unless the candidate's application stipulates otherwise. Candidates who wish a referee or referees to be approached only with their specific permission, and/or if they are shortlisted for interview, are asked to state such requirements alongside the details of the relevant referee(s).

Further details may be obtained from Dr Judith Scheele (tel. 01865 276075, email judith.scheele@anthro.ox.ac.uk).
