FIXED-TERM STIPENDIARY LECTURERSHIP IN FRENCH

The College proposes to appoint a twelve-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in French for Michaelmas and Hilary Terms 2009-10 to cover the College's teaching and organizational needs whilst Professor Howells, the College's Fellow in French, is on leave. The period of appointment will be 1 September 2009 to 30 April 2010.

The Lecturer will be required to give twelve hours a week of tutorials during the eight weeks of Full Term (the College allows stipendiary lecturers to 'weight' their hours thus required real contact hours may be slightly less), taking responsibility for the teaching of French literature in the College. The period to be covered ranges from the early nineteenth century to the present. This involves the first-year literature and commentary papers (Papers III and IV) and, for the Final Honours School, the Modern Period Paper (Paper VIII) and those Special Authors (Paper XI) which they are able to teach.

The Lecturer will also be expected to take responsibility for those students reading French and for their teaching arrangements in French, including oversight of their studies, setting and marking collections (internal termly examinations), and authorizing reports, and to share responsibility for their pastoral care. The Lecturer will be a member of the College's Tutorial Board and be expected to attend its meetings. He or she would also be expected to be involved in the undergraduate admissions process.

The stipend will be on a scale starting from £16,101 for the two terms (two-thirds of the annual salary on point 1 of the Senior Tutors' Committee recommended scale), and the position is superannuable under USS. The Lecturer will be a member of the College's Senior Common Room, will be entitled to six meals a week during term-time free of charge, and will be paid a small allowance to entertain undergraduates as part of regular pastoral contact.

Further particulars are available on the Wadham College website (http://www.wadham.ox.ac.uk/). The closing date for applications is 3 July 2009.
