Girton College, in conjunction with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), wishes to appoint a Senior Research Fellow to work in the field of gas turbines for power generation. The successful applicant will have had experience of the development and/or application of CFD to aerodynamic problems and of the development and/or use of experimental facilities. The Research Fellow will be based at the Whittle Laboratory, which is part of the Department of Engineering.
The main role of the Research Fellow will be to conduct research in the field of turbine aerodynamics and heat transfer in the context of state-of-the-art gas turbines which are relevant to MHI. This will range from long-term research to shorter investigations of relevance to development engines. The Fellow will also be expected to carry out her or his own projects. The successful candidate will maintain a close working relationship with MHI.
The research is likely to be based around experimental and CFD investigations. The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with Professor H. P. Hodson, Dr Graham Pullan, and other members of the Whittle Laboratory. The experimental work may be conducted using facilities at the Whittle Laboratory or at the Research and Development Centre of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Takasago, Japan. Computational studies will be used to assist the understanding of experimental data and help in the generation of new design methods. The Research Fellow will have direct responsibility for the research. The successful applicant will also be expected to take an active role in the teaching of undergraduates within the College.
The appointment will commence on 1 August 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter. The stipend is in the range £33,432 to £46,278 a year and will be pensionable under USS. It is expected that applicants will have, or expect to have, a Ph.D. Degree or equivalent experience in the general area of turbomachinery.
