Examination in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics for the degree of Master of Philosophy

On the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, the General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved Translational Medicine and Therapeutics as a subject for advanced study for the M.Phil. Degree as both a full-time one-year course and a two-year part-time course, with effect from 1 October 2009.

The Board of Graduate Studies are satisfied that suitable arrangements are in place to enable part-time students to have sufficient access to teaching and other resources. The Board are also satisfied that the part-time course is comparable to the full-time version in content, intended learning outcomes, the teaching and other resources available, and forms of assessment. The Council of the School of Clinical Medicine has confirmed that the proposal is consistent with the School's strategic plans, both in respect of the objectives of the School and in terms of any implications for student numbers.

Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

Translational Medicine and Therapeutics

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year full-time or two-year part-time course of study in Translational Medicine and Therapeutics for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(a) a thesis not exceeding 15,000 words in length, including footnotes but excluding tables, appendices, and bibliography, on a subject approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculties of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine;
(b) an essay of not more than 5,000 words on a topic approved by the Degree Committee on an aspect of the core and optional areas of study prescribed in the syllabus.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls, and on the other work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1.
