REGULATIONS FOR EXAMINATIONS

Examination in African Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy

The General Board give notice that, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board or other authority concerned, the regulations for certain University examinations have been amended as follows:

On the recommendation of the Degree Committee for the Faculty of History, the General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved African Studies as a subject for advanced study for the M.Phil. Degree (one-year full-time course), with effect from 1 October 2010. Special regulations for the examination in the subject have been approved as follows:

African Studies

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in African Studies for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist of:
(a) a thesis of not less than 15,000 words in length, including notes and appendices, but excluding bibliography, on a topic approved by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of History;
(b) two essays, each of not more than 5,000 words and on a topic chosen from a list of topics prescribed by the Degree Committee.

The Degree Committee shall give notice of the topics specified under (b) above not later than the division of Lent Term each year.

2. The examination may include, at the discretion of the Examiners, an oral examination on the thesis and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls, and on the other work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1.
