PROFESSOR IN GENERAL PRACTICE AND GOVERNING BODY FELLOW AT HARRIS MANCHESTER COLLEGE

Applications are invited for a newly established Professorship in General Practice in the Oxford University Department of Primary Health Care associated with a Fellowship at Harris Manchester College. The appointee will join a College which offers a distinctive, friendly, and supportive atmosphere and a thriving Department which excelled in the 2008 RAE and is committed to undertake research which impacts on clinical practice.

The chair is a full-time clinical post and must be held in conjunction with an honorary (non-stipendiary) clinical appointment. The appointee must be eligible to work as a general practitioner in the UK; the post-holder will be free to negotiate which NHS general practice he or she joins but will be expected to undertake two or three half-day clinical sessions each week.

The main Departmental responsibility of the appointee will be to undertake clinical research. This will involve gaining research programme funding, leading a research group, and contributing substantially to the environment of academic excellence within the Department. The post-holder will also be expected to play a key role in College supervision and support of medical students.

The appointment will be on salary scale A80 (£73,403 to £98,962) and it is anticipated that the post-holder will also be eligible for an NHS Clinical Excellence Award.

JAMES MARTIN 21st CENTURY SCHOOL PROFESSOR IN ENERGY MATERIALS

The University has created a new Professorship of Energy Materials with financial support from the James Martin 21st Century School. The theme of energy is at the top of the University's research priorities, and Oxford is committed to playing a major part in addressing the serious scientific challenges that have to be solved to make an impact on the global energy problem. This new post, based in the Department of Materials, will shape Oxford's strategic research portfolio in this area into a coherent and internationally recognized centre for world-class science in energy materials, including strong interactions with policy and socio-economic issues. The new chair will also develop and lead her or his independent research, preferably in either materials for new generations of nuclear energy or demand reduction. The post-holder will benefit from membership of the interdisciplinary James Martin 21st Century School and will be expected to contribute to its research portfolio and provide leadership within the School on energy issues. The University seeks to appoint a person with a record of outstanding international excellence in research within the field of energy materials who, through leadership and the distinction of her or his contribution to the field, will ensure the pursuit of the highest standards in research and teaching in energy materials at Oxford, and its wider recognition outside. The holder of the chair will be elected to a Professorial Fellowship at Mansfield College.

Applications are now invited for this post, tenable from 1 October 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.
