Sidney Sussex College

COLLEGE TEACHING ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED MATHEMATICS

Sidney Sussex College seeks to appoint a College Teaching Associate in Applied Mathematics from 1 October 2009, to contribute to teaching and direction of studies.

For a researcher interested in teaching, the post provides stimulating teaching experience in a supportive collegiate environment. It would enable the Associate to enjoy the company and encouragement of a lively and multidisciplinary academic Fellowship.

The Associate is expected to teach for four hours a week during the teaching terms (the full eight weeks of the Michaelmas and Lent Terms, and the first four weeks of the Easter Term): this amounts to 80 hours of contact time. The Associate will also take part in the process of undergraduate admissions and direct studies in Applied Mathematics in collaboration with Dr Ross, who directs studies for Pure Mathematics. A willingness to be involved in the College's Mathematics Society and in other subject-related activities is highly desirable.

Most applicants will be engaged in research in the University at postdoctoral level, but other applicant profiles will also be considered. It is unlikely that a successful candidate would have a current affiliation to any College in the University.

The remuneration package is variable, as some elements depend on number of hours taught and number of students; the post is non-pensionable. In addition to the stipend and supervision payments, the Associate will also benefit from the availability of shared office space, IT support, daily meals, and formal dining.

The Associateship may be renewed by mutual agreement at the end of this first academical year; from the time of such a renewal, the College would provide the holder with one year's notice before terminating the arrangement.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to the Mathematics Fellows - Professor Ron Horgan (tel. 01223 337839, email rrh@damtp.cam.ac.uk) and Dr Julius Ross (tel. 01223 330838, email jar62@cam.ac.uk), as well as to the Senior Tutor, Mr Max Beber (tel. 01223 338847, email senior.tutor@sid.cam.ac.uk). Applications, using the application form downloadable from the Sidney Sussex website (http://www.sid.cam.ac.uk/), must be submitted to the Senior Tutor's Assistant, Mrs Maria Booth (tel. 01223 338847, email mtb28@cam.ac.uk) by Wednesday, 10 June.
