MAPLETHORPE FELLOWSHIP IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Murray Edwards College (formerly New Hall), welcomes applications for the Maplethorpe Fellowship in Biological Sciences.

In June 2008, New Hall was refounded as Murray Edwards College, with a benefaction of £30 million from one of its alumnae. The College is entering a pivotal part of its history and plans to invest its energy and enhanced funds and resources to enable the College to recruit and consolidate the development of an outstanding Fellowship.

The College is seeking to appoint a University Teaching Officer, or similarly established scientist working in an institution associated with the University, as the second Maplethorpe Fellow in the College's history, in succession to Dr Hatty Harris who is retiring in September 2009 and has held the Fellowship for 23 years.

The Maplethorpe Fellow will be an Official Fellow of the College, Director of Studies in Biological Sciences for approximately twelve students a year, and a six-hour College Lecturer. As a Fellow and Director of Studies, there is an expectation of leading student interview panels and taking part, on occasions, in specific College committees. The position is renewable every five years, and conditional upon performance and the Fellow's continued position within the University.

The Fellowship and the associated responsibilities carry their own remuneration, and the College means to recognize their impact on the Maplethorpe Fellow's time by dedicating a sum to be negotiated (c. £15,000 to £20,000 a year) to support the Fellow's research activities.

An application, comprising a curriculum vitae, covering letter, and the names of three referees, should reach the Secretary to the President, Murray Edwards College, New Hall, Cambridge, CB3 0DF (email skg22@cam.ac.uk) by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 27 May 2009. Referees should be asked to write directly to the President by the same date. Interviews will be held on 2 June 2009.

New Hall is an equal opportunities employer.
