COLLEGE LECTURERSHIP AND CLASSICS FACULTY FELLOWSHIP IN CLASSICS

St Hilda's College invites applications for a fixed-term, six-hour Stipendiary Lecturership in Classics, from 1 October 2009 until 30 September 2010, to cover a period of maternity leave. The majority of the teaching will be tutorials and classes in Latin language and literature, but a willingness to teach a small amount of Greek would be an advantage. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to set and mark College examinations, to participate in the routine administration of Classics, to take part in undergraduate admissions, and to assist with pastoral care of undergraduates reading the subject.

The successful candidate will be appointed to a Faculty Fellowship of the Faculty of Classics, and will be a member of the Sub-Faculty of Classical Languages and Literature. She or he will be required to give eight hours of University lectures in Latin Literature, on a topic to be agreed with the Lecture List Secretary of the Sub-Faculty of Classical Languages and Literature. The opportunity for further lecturing may be available, subject to the Sub-Faculty's needs.

Candidates should have a strong educational background, with a good first degree, and should be working for, or have already obtained, a doctorate in Classical Literature. Some teaching experience would be an advantage. The salary for the post is £12,076 to £13,592 (in 2008-09 terms), depending on qualifications and experience, and membership of the USS pension scheme is offered. The Lecturer will be entitled to five meals a week (either lunch or dinner) free of charge during weeks 0 to 9 of each term, with additional out-of-term entitlements as described in the further particulars. Research and entertainment allowances are also offered, as well as access to a teaching room. Remuneration for lectures for the Faculty of Classics will be paid separately, currently at the rate of £100 a lecture.

Further particulars, including details of how to apply, are available from the Academic Registrar, St Hilda's College (email college.office@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk) and from the St Hilda's College website (http://www.st-hildas.ox.ac.uk/). The closing date is Friday, 15 May 2009, and it is expected that interviews will take place later this month or early in June.

St Hilda's College is an equal opportunities employer.
