St Hilda's College invites applications for a fixed-term, six-hour Stipendiary Lecturership in Ancient History from 1 October 2009 until 30 April 2011 (Michaelmas Term 2009 to Hilary Term 2011 inclusive), to cover a period of maternity and research leave. The successful candidate will provide teaching in tutorials and classes for papers in Ancient History, particularly the Roman Imperial period, as required (details of the papers are in the further particulars). In addition he or she will be expected to set and mark College examinations, to participate in the routine administration of the degrees involving Ancient History, to take part in undergraduate admissions, and to assist with pastoral care of undergraduates reading the subject. He or she will also act as College adviser to graduate students in St Hilda's reading for a second degree in Ancient History. The successful candidate will be appointed to a Faculty Fellowship of the Faculty of Classics, and will be a member of the Sub-Faculty of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. He or she will be required to give eight hours of University lectures each year, in Roman History, on a topic to be agreed with the Lecture List Secretary of the Sub-Faculty of Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. The opportunity for further lecturing may be available, subject to the Sub-Faculty's needs.

Candidates should have a strong educational background, with a good first degree, and should be working for or have already obtained a doctorate in Ancient History. Some teaching experience would be an advantage. The salary for the post is £12,076 to £13,592 (in 2008-09 terms), depending on qualifications and experience, and membership of the USS pension scheme is offered. The Lecturer will be entitled to five meals a week (either lunch or dinner) free of charge during weeks 0 to 9 of each term, with additional out-of-term entitlements as described in the further particulars. Research and entertainment allowances are also offered, as well as access to a teaching room. Remuneration for lectures for the Faculty of Classics will be paid separately, currently at the rate of £100 per lecture.

Further particulars, including details of how to apply, are available from the Academic Registrar, St Hilda's College (email college.office@st-hildas.ox.ac.uk) and from the St Hilda's College website (http://www.st-hildas.ox.ac.uk/). The closing date is Monday, 11 May 2009, and it is expected that interviews will take place during the week of 18 May.

FIXED-TERM BEALE FELLOWSHIP IN ZOOLOGY

St Hilda's College invites applications for a fixed-term Beale Fellowship in Zoology, from 1 September 2009. This post combines a new College teaching position, based on a four-hour Stipendiary Lecturership in Zoology, with an existing post in Zoology at the University of Oxford (either a research post or a Departmental Lecturership). The successful candidate will be a Fellow of the College and a member of the Governing Body. He or she will provide four hours a week teaching in tutorials and classes for the Biological Sciences degree course, including aspects of Animal Biology, Environmental Biology, Biology of Animal and Plant Disease, and Evolution and Systematics (details of the papers are in the further particulars). In addition he or she will set and mark College examinations, participate in the routine administration of Biological Sciences, take part in undergraduate admissions, assist with pastoral care of undergraduates reading the subject, and act as College adviser to postgraduate students (up to a maximum of four students).

As stated above, candidates will already have a research or departmental position in Zoology at the University of Oxford. This post will be co-terminous with the successful candidate's existing contract. Candidates should have a doctorate in an appropriate subject, and a proven record of research and teaching. The starting salary for the post is £8,050 to £9,061 a year (in 2008-09 terms), depending on qualifications and experience, and membership of the USS pension scheme is offered.
