Graces submitted to the Regent House on 29 April 2009

The Council submits the following Graces to the Regent House. These Graces, other than any which is withdrawn or for which a ballot is requested in accordance with the regulations for Graces of the Regent House (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 107), will be deemed to have been approved at 4 p.m. on Friday, 8 May 2009.

1. That a Jerry Lee Fund in Experimental Criminology be established in the University, to be governed by the following regulations:1

Jerry Lee Fund for Experimental Criminology

1. The sums received from the Jerry Lee Foundation shall form a fund for the benefit of postgraduate students or postdoctoral research staff in the Institute of Criminology undertaking research in Experimental Criminology.

2. The Managers of the Fund shall be the Director of the Institute of Criminology (who shall be Chairman), the Wolfson Professor of Criminology, and two persons with experience in Experimental Criminology appointed by the Committee of Management of the Institute of Criminology.

3. The capital and income of the Fund shall be applied at the discretion of the Managers:
(a) to provide the stipend, national insurance, and pension contributions of one or more Jerry Lee Fellows in Experimental Criminology who shall conduct research in the field of Experimental Criminology. The annual stipend of a Fellow shall be determined by the Managers.
(b) to provide one or more Jerry Lee Scholarships in Experimental Criminology for persons who are, or are about to be, registered for the Ph.D. Degree in the field of Experimental Criminology in the Institute of Criminology.

4. A Scholarship may provide
(a) a maintenance payment to be determined by the Managers,
(b) a payment to meet any University and/or College fees payable by the Scholar,
(c) a contribution to other costs such as equipment, travel expenses, according to the discretion of the Managers.

In determining the award the Managers shall take into account any other financial resources available to the Scholar.

5. After provision has been made for any Fellowships and Scholarships, the income of the Fund, and such portion of the capital as they may determine, shall be applied towards other costs related to experimental research in the Institute of Criminology at the discretion of the Managers.

6. Any unexpended income of the Fund in a financial year may be accumulated and expended in any one or more subsequent years in accordance with Regulations 3 to 5, as may be determined by the Managers.

2. That Regulation 2 for the Evans Fund be amended by removing class (e) of the Advisory Committee (one person appointed by the Trustees).2

3. That the regulations for certain Funds currently under the supervision of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies be amended as follows:3

Professor of Japanese Studies (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 676)

Regulation 2.

By replacing in the final line the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Professor of Japanese Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Japanese in the Department of East Asian Studies'.

Arberry Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 723)

Regulation 3.

By amending the regulations so as to read:

3. The Awarders of this Scholarship shall be the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in the Department.

Regulation 4.

By inserting in line 2 after the words 'Arabic and Persian' the words 'in any Part of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos or' and, with effect from 1 October 2011, by deleting the words 'or in either Part of the Oriental Studies Tripos'.

Bender Prize (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 731)

Regulation 2.

By replacing, with effect from 1 October 2011, in line 2 the words 'Oriental Studies Tripos' by the words 'Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos'.

John Bennett Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 731)

Regulation 3.

By replacing the words 'The Managers of the Fund shall be the Committee of Management of the Centre of Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'The Fund shall be managed by the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in the Department'.

Regulation 5(b).

By replacing in line 1 the words 'the Centre of Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'teaching officers in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies'.

Carmen Blacker Prize for Japanese Studies (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 732)

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

2. The Fund shall be managed by the Head of the Department of East Asian Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Japanese in the Department.

Regulation 3.

By replacing in line 2, with effect from 1 October 2011, the words 'Part II of the Oriental Studies Tripos' by the words 'Part II of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos'.

Browne Memorial Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 737)

Regulation 2.

By replacing in line 2 the words 'and three by the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'and three appointed by the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in the Department'.

Chinese Studies Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 750)

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

2. The Fund shall be managed by the Head of the Department of East Asian Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Chinese in the Department.

Regulation 3(a).

By inserting in line 3 of the sub-paragraph, after the words 'Examiners for' the words 'any Part of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos or' and, with effect from 1 October 2011, by deleting the words 'or Part I or Part II of the Oriental Studies Tripos'.

Chuan Lyu Fellowship and Senior Visiting Scholarship Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 751)

Regulation 1.

By deleting from this regulation in lines 4-5 the words ', in areas of study falling within the field of interest of the East Asia Institute'.

Regulation 2(a).

By replacing the words 'the Committee of Management of the East Asia Institute' by the words 'the Head of Department of East Asian Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Chinese in the Department'.

Chuan Lyu Lectureship Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 751)

Regulation 2.

By replacing the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Head of Department of East Asian Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Chinese in the Department'.

Martin Hinds Travel Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 797)

Regulation 1.

By replacing in line 4 the words 'Oriental Studies' by the words 'Middle Eastern Studies'.

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

Japanese Studies Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 801)

Regulation 1.

By replacing in the last line of the regulation the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Head of the Department of East Asian Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Japanese in the Department'.

C. H. W. Johns Memorial Fund and Studentship (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 803)

Regulation 2.

By replacing in lines 2-3 the words 'not necessarily consisting wholly of members of the Board' by the words 'which will include University Teaching Officers in Assyriology or cognate subjects'.

Kennedy Leigh Fund for Modern Hebrew (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 814)

Regulation 2(b).

By amending the sub-paragraph so as to read:
(b) two persons appointed by the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies to serve for two years from 1 January following their appointment, one of whom shall be appointed after consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Hebrew in the Department and one in consultation with the Trustees of the Kennedy Leigh Charitable Trust.

Mason Prize for Biblical Hebrew (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 826)

Regulation 3.

Thomas Mulvey Egyptology Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 837)

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation, with effect from 1 October 2011, so as to read:

2. The Prize shall be awarded by the Examiners for Part IIB of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos to a candidate taking two or more papers in Egyptology who has shown distinction in Egyptology papers in the examination in Archaeology for Part IIB of that Tripos.

Regulation 3.

By replacing, with effect from 1 October 2011, the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology'.

Regulation 4.

By deleting from the end of the regulation the words 'for the library of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies'.

Regulation 6.

By replacing in line 3 the words 'three persons appointed by the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and one person appointed by the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology' by the words 'four persons appointed by the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology'.

Margaret Munn-Rankin Fund for Assyriology (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 838)

Regulation 2.

By replacing the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology'.

Regulation 2.

By replacing in line 1, with effect from 1 October 2009, the words 'Part I of the Oriental Studies Tripos' by the words 'Part IB of the Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos'.

Regulation 1.

By replacing in line 2, with effect from 1 October 2011, the words 'Oriental Studies Tripos' by the words 'Asian and Middle Eastern Studies Tripos'.

Ali Reza and Mohamed Soudavar Fund for Persian Studies (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 890)

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

2. The Fund shall be under the control of a Board of Managers who shall be three teaching officers in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies appointed by the Head of the Department in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in the Department to serve for two years from 1 January following their appointment, one of whom shall be appointed on the nomination of Mr Freydoun Soudavar or his duly authorized representative.

Ali Reza and Mohamed Soudavar Lectureship Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 891)

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

2. The Fund shall be under the control of a Board of Managers who shall be three teaching officers in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies appointed by the Head of the Department in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in the Department to serve for two years from 1 January following their appointment, one of whom shall be appointed on the nomination of the Trustees of the Azerila Foundation.

John Stewart of Rannoch Hebrew Fund and Scholarships (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 896)

Regulation 1.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

1. The John Stewart of Rannoch Hebrew Fund shall be managed by the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Hebrew in the Department.

Tyrwhitt's Hebrew Scholarships (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 910)

Regulations 3 and 9.

By replacing in each case in line 2 the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Hebrew in the Department'.

Wright Studentship (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 937)

Regulations 4-6.

By amending the regulations so as to read:

4. The election should be made annually during the first half of the Lent Term.

5. Notice that an election is to take place shall be given by the Electors by the beginning of the Michaelmas Term preceding the election.

6. Application should be sent to the Registrary by the end of the Michaelmas Term preceding the election and shall be accompanied by a statement of the course of research which the candidate proposes to undertake together with such evidence of her or his qualifications as the candidate may wish to submit.

Regulation 9.

By replacing the words 'the Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies' by the words 'the Head of the Department of Middle Eastern Studies in consultation with and with the agreement of the teaching officers in Arabic in the Department'.

Yasuda Trust and Banking Company Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 938)

Regulation 1.

By deleting the final sentence.

Regulation 2.

By amending the regulation so as to read:

2. The Managers of the Fund shall be the Professor of Japanese Studies, the Head of the Department of East Asian Studies, and the teaching officers in Japanese in the Department.

Thomas Young Medal (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 940)

Regulation 1.

By deleting from line 1, with effect from 1 October 2011, the words 'in Part II of the Oriental Studies Tripos or'.

Regulation 3(b).

By replacing the sub-paragraph so as to read:
(b) not more than six persons appointed by the Faculty Board of Archaeology and Anthropology.

2 Statutes and Ordinances, p. 769. Under Mr Evans's Will the National Westminster Bank was appointed Trustee of the Fund. Pursuant to a Deed of Retirement and Appointment of New Trustees dated 24 March 2009 the University has been appointed sole Trustee in place of the Bank. As a result, class (e) of the membership of the Advisory Committee is now redundant (the five members in classes (a)-(d) being either University officers or persons appointed by University bodies).

3 The regulations for these Funds have been amended to reflect the recent organization changes within the Faculty including the establishment of the Departments of East Asian Studies and of Middle Eastern Studies, and the transfer of the teaching of Egyptology and Assyriology to the Faculty of Archaeology and Anthropology.
