PWF Systems Manager (Senior Computer Officer) in the University Computing Service

The University Computing Service is seeking a PWF Systems Manager. The successful applicant will manage the systems and the technical staff supporting the service's Public Workstation Facility (the PWF) and will be responsible for technical implementation and development of its supporting infrastructure and systems.

The Computing Service provides computer facilities and related services in support of teaching and research and the PWF is its primary service providing desktop computing facilities to the staff and students of the University. Windows, Linux, and Macintosh OS X workstations are supported, including the provision of general access computer rooms and classrooms.

The successful applicant will have a good first degree standard or equivalent in a technical subject, with an IT related component, and substantial experience working in a service environment involving a broad range of networked server systems and user workstations.

He or she will have knowledge and experience of the technical development and maintenance of complex LAN solutions, comprising workstations, servers, storage, and networking. Applicants should also have the ability to progress the technical development of the PWF systems to meet service requirements.

The successful applicant will be experienced in managing staff and IT projects, and will have the ability to take the technical lead in a team of IT professionals. He or she will have good interpersonal skills and will be a good communicator, both orally and in written form. He or she will have experience of IT procurement.

This is a permanent appointment, subject to a nine-month satisfactory probation period, on a salary scale of £49,096 to £52,086, with initial salary depending on experience. Senior Technical Specialist - Networking (Computer Officer) in the Management Information Services Division of the University Offices

A vacancy exists for a Senior Technical Specialist in the Management Information Services Division. The Division hosts and supports the computing needs of major University business applications (Finance, Student Records, Human Resources, Payroll, Pensions, Grants, and Estate Management), web, and the desktop services to approximately 1,000 user workstations of the Unified Administrative Service (UAS). All these services are underpinned by the Administrative Computer Network (ACN) which connects multiple sites to a triangulated central core network. External connectivity is managed through firewalls and load balancers.

The post-holder will be expected to be the network technical lead, and support all aspects of network services and administration in these environments, working closely with other support staff to provide secure, reliable network connectivity. In addition, the post-holder will liaise with external contractors, the University Computing Service, and the University Estate Management and Building Service in relation to the networking provision of the many UAS offices. The post-holder will also be expected to co-ordinate day to day network related activity to meet project and operational goals, and provide recommendations for the longer term strategic network development.

Candidates should be educated to degree level or equivalent, with extensive experience of delivering network strategies in a secure manner. Knowledge of vlans, tcp/ip routing, and firewalls, in a mixed Unix windows environment is essential. The salary will be in the range of £36,532 to £46,278 a year.

Senior Trainer and Support Specialist (Computer Officer) in the University Computing Service

The University Computing Service has a vacancy for a Senior Trainer and Support Specialist. The Computing Service offers a large range of instructor-led courses, from advanced technical courses aimed at IT support staff to courses aimed at both staff and students with various levels of ability. Courses may also be run on behalf of other Departments or Colleges, and other institutions may use facilities managed by the Computing Service Training team. The holder of this post will work closely with, and deputize for, the Training Services Manager, helping to administrate the IT training programme and use of training facilities and resources. He or she will also develop and deliver courses themself, and be responsible for inducting and mentoring new trainers and promoting best practice in training within the Department. The post-holder will also be expected to contribute to providing general technical support and advice to members of the University.

The successful applicant will have a good degree or equivalent, be an excellent trainer, and must be able to communicate effectively with computer users at all levels in a variety of situations. A broad knowledge of IT is required, including experience of Microsoft Windows systems, Apple Macintoshes, Unix systems, and common desktop applications. It is expected that the holder of the post will have substantial experience in IT training and support, and should be capable of writing technical documentation. He or she also needs good interpersonal, diplomatic, and organizational skills, and should be self-motivated and capable of working unsupervised. He or she must be capable of developing the training skills of staff at all levels, including senior staff of the Computing Service. Experience of working in an academic support environment would be a distinct advantage.

Applications are invited from members of the Senate for appointment as an Esquire Bedell with effect from 1 October 2009.

The principal duty is to attend the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor on public occasions, including Congregations and University Sermons. The appointment is open to women and men.

The pensionable stipend for an Esquire Bedell is £4,465 a year.

Expressions of interest are also invited for service as an Assistant Bedell to relieve the Esquire Bedells on particular occasions, such as large Congregations.

Teaching Associate in Portuguese Literary and Cultural Studies (part-time) in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is seeking to appoint a part-time (50%) Teaching Associate in Portuguese Literary and Cultural Studies for ten months with effect from 1 September 2009. The post-holder will contribute to the teaching of Portuguese undergraduate Tripos papers. Teaching will include lectures, seminars, and classes. The post-holder will also be expected to undertake supervision of undergraduate students by some Colleges. Applicants should be willing to take an active part in general Departmental administration and examining. Potential applicants should also have a record of - or clearly demonstrate the potential for - outstanding research in a relevant field. A native or excellent non-native command of English and Portuguese is essential.
