Examination in Technology Policy for the degree of Master of Philosophy

With effect from 1 October 2009

The General Board and the Board of Graduate Studies have approved a proposal from the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Business and Management to introduce a second option for candidates for the examination in the subject Technology Policy. Option B will provide training for candidates who intend to continue to study for the Ph.D. Degree. The special regulations for the examination have accordingly been amended as set out below:

Technology Policy

1. The scheme of examination for the one-year course of study in Technology Policy for the degree of Master of Philosophy shall consist, at the choice of the candidate, of either Option A or Option B as follows:

Option A

The examination shall consist of:
(a) at least nine modules selected from a list of mandatory and optional modules published by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Business and Management not later than the end of the Easter Term of the academical year preceding that in which the examination is to be held. Subject to a minimum number of nine, the Degree Committee shall specify the precise number of mandatory and optional modules required. The Degree Committee shall have the power to give notice of additional optional modules not later than the end of the Michaelmas Term of the academical year of the examination;
(b) a project report of not more than 12,000 words in length, including diagrams and footnotes, but excluding bibliography and appendices on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

Option B

The examination shall consist of:
(a) at least six modules selected from a list of mandatory and optional modules published by the Degree Committee for the Faculty of Business and Management not later than the end of the Michaelmas Term preceding the examination;
(b) a thesis of not more than 12,000 words in length, including diagrams and footnotes, but excluding bibliography and appendices on a subject approved by the Degree Committee.

2. In publishing the list of modules and additional modules the Degree Committee shall announce the form of examination for each module, which shall be either a written paper, or one or more essays or other exercises, or a combination of these, and shall specify the duration of any written paper and the limit to be placed on the length of any essay or other exercise.

3. At the discretion of the Examiners, the examination may include an oral examination on the work submitted by the candidate under Regulation 1 and on the general field of knowledge within which it falls.
