New Hall

SENIOR TUTOR AND FELLOW

Murray Edwards College (formerly New Hall), welcomes applications for the post of Senior Tutor and Fellow, to commence 1 August 2009. The Senior Tutor is accountable to the Governing Body through the Council, for overseeing the College's academic activities. She or he is expected to lead the academic policy and performance of the College, and oversee the provision of student support and welfare.

The Senior Tutor is responsible for the academic environment of the College, the management and delivery of all supervisions within the College, and the support and guidance of the Tutors. She or he is expected to monitor and review the academic needs and performance of the College. As a leading academic, the Senior Tutor needs to be a strong and credible advocate for the College within relevant inter-College and University fora, and is expected to bring impartial analysis in relation to all College and University academic matters, as well as demonstrate significant managerial and organizational skills.

In June 2008, New Hall was refounded as Murray Edwards College, with a benefaction of £30m from one of its alumnae. The College is entering a pivotal part of its history and plans to invest its energy and enhanced funds to enable the College to recruit young women of remarkable potential through the consolidation and development of an outstanding Fellowship. Murray Edwards has a distinctive environment characterized by a pride in its students, a Fellowship that contributes widely to all aspects of College life, and the belief that nurturing individual potential will continue to produce graduates of exceptional abilities. Previous graduates include Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Dame Barbara Stocking, Mishal Hussain, Sue Perkins, and Joanna MacGregor.

One of 31 Colleges in the University, Murray Edwards College is a self-governing institution. Ultimate authority rests with the Governing Body, as advised by the College Council, comprised of ex-officio members (including the Senior Tutor), elected representatives from the Fellowship, the JCR and MCR, and co-opted members.

The salary will be based on the experience and portfolio of the applicant, but it is anticipated it will be placed within the University Readership scale. Although the office of Senior Tutor is full-time, the post-holder may wish to continue to pursue professional or academic interests that are compatible with the various responsibilities associated with the post.
