Pembroke College

ADMISSIONS TUTOR

The College seeks applications for the post of Admissions Tutor from 1 July 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter. The appointment will be for five years in the first instance, with the expectation, subject to review, of reappointment to the retirement age.

In recent years, Pembroke College has been one of the most popular Cambridge Colleges as measured by the ratio of applications to undergraduate places on offer. The College promotes diversity in excellence, and has devoted considerable energy and resources to ensuring that candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply and enjoy the support they need to develop their potential in Cambridge. The Admissions Tutor will play a key part in maintaining these successes, and will be expected to develop them further in ways that are consonant with ongoing intercollegiate and University initiatives. The successful candidate will have current knowledge of British schools and universities, and will use this knowledge to help ensure that the College maintains its reputation for outstanding academic performance, social responsibility, and cultural diversity.

The Admissions Tutor will be responsible for overseeing the process of recruitment, assessment, and selection of undergraduate applicants to the College. He or she will co-ordinate and develop the College's existing outreach and widening participation initiatives to encourage applications to the College from well-qualified students from all backgrounds. The Admissions Tutor will be supported in these tasks by a dedicated and experienced Admissions Officer, a Schools Liaison Officer whose responsibilities are divided between Pembroke College and St Catharine's College, and by other Fellows who act as Admissions Commissioners with responsibilities during interview season for a range of cognate subjects; he or she will also work closely with the College's Directors of Studies on Open Days and during the assessment and selection of applicants to ensure the continuing quality of the College's undergraduate intake.

The Admissions Tutor will, in the absence of any other ongoing commitments within Cambridge University, also be appointed to a College Lectureship, to provide between five and seven hours a week of undergraduate supervision during the teaching year on one of the Cambridge undergraduate degree courses; there is no restriction as to the subject area. Applications are also welcomed from current University Lecturers or postdoctoral researchers seeking to combine this post with their current responsibilities; it is envisaged that admissions responsibilities alone will account for a 0.5 FTE post. The stipend will be between Step 48 and Step 57 of the University's salary spine, currently £35,469 and £46,278, pro rata at 50% for University Lecturers or postdoctoral researchers. The Admissions Tutor will be elected to an Official Fellowship.

An application form and further particulars may be obtained from the Senior Tutor's Assistant, Sally Clowes (email sts.staff@pem.cam.ac.uk) and from the Pembroke College website (http://www.pem.cam.ac.uk/about/academic-vacancies/). Initial enquiries may be made to the Senior Tutor, Dr Mark Wormald (tel. 01223 338114, email mrw1002@cam.ac.uk). The closing date for applications is 31 March 2009. Candidates should ask three referees to write to the Senior Tutor's Assistant, Sally Clowes, by that date.
