Smuts Memorial Fund Commonwealth Lectures: Notice

The Ordinances of the Smuts Memorial Fund (Statutes and Ordinances, p. 889) state that: 'The third charge on the income of the Fund shall be the cost of a lecture or course of lectures to be delivered by a Smuts Memorial Lecturer appointed from time to time, on such conditions as they may think fit, by the Board of Managers of the Fund.'

The lectures, which must be on a Commonwealth-related subject, are organized and advertised by the hosting Department, but the Smuts Memorial Fund makes a financial contribution.

The Board of Managers beg leave to announce that henceforth the lectures will be held biennially, with the next lectures held in the academical year 2010-11. Relevant Departments will shortly be invited to bid for funds of up to £2,500 towards the direct costs of the lectures, and the closing date for receipt of applications is 31 March 2009.

Departments may continue to submit requests to the Managers in the usual way for support for ad hoc lectures outside the two-yearly cycle.

For further information, please contact the Administrator to the Managers, Miss Kathleen White (email kfw20@admin.cam.ac.uk).
