Wolfson College

STIPENDIARY JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN HUMANITIES 2009

Wolfson College, a postgraduate College, proposes to make one election to a Stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship in the following subject area: world literatures of the 20th and 21st centuries in English.

The Fellowship will be for three years, to commence on 1 October 2009. The person elected will be required to carry out research in Oxford in the above field.

Applications are invited from men and women. Candidates should have relevant postgraduate experience by commencement of the Fellowship, and preference will be given to those holding a doctorate and who have not already held a stipendiary Junior Research Fellowship. Applications should include a full curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications, a description in detail of the proposed research and the candidate's qualifications for undertaking it, specimens of the candidate's written work up to a total length of 10,000 words, the names of three referees, and a completed application form.

Candidates should write directly to their referees asking them without further request to send a confidential reference to the President's PA by the closing date. References may be faxed, emailed or posted direct to the President's PA using the information below.

The annual stipend will be £15,069 plus any general percentage increase in academic salaries that may come into effect. Basic single accommodation in College for the duration of the Fellowship will be offered without charge; if upgraded, double or family accommodation is required, a charge will be made equal to the difference in rents. If the Fellow elects not to live in College accommodation, a housing allowance will be paid equivalent to the current rent of a basic single room in College. These Fellowships carry Common Table rights (currently up to £36.00 a week for own meals in Hall). The Fellow will be permitted to undertake up to six hours' teaching a week. The Fellowship will not normally be tenable with another stipendiary position: if, exceptionally, the Fellowship is awarded to a person holding such a position, some adjustment in the stipend may be made. The Fellow will normally be required to reside within twelve miles of the centre of Oxford. Any election made will be subject to the granting of a work permit, if applicable.

For an application form, please send a self-addressed envelope to the President's PA, Wolfson College, Oxford, OX2 6UD. Application forms are also available from the College Lodge or the College website (http://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/fellowships/). The closing date is 4 p.m. on Friday, 13 March 2009. The interview date is the morning of Thursday, 7 May 2009.

It should be noted that the College is only able to offer financial assistance towards interview travelling expenses when the endowment associated with the Fellowship allows us to do so and, unfortunately, in the current financial climate this is not likely to be possible.

NON-STIPENDIARY RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS IN HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL STUDIES 2009

(This includes those formerly described as non-stipendiary Junior Research Fellows.)

Wolfson College proposes to elect up to twelve non-stipendiary Research Fellows in Humanities and Social Studies, if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves, without limitation of subject, from 1 October 2009. Candidates will be required to be engaged in research work within an Oxford University Department or Faculty, and to spend the greater part of the academical year in Oxford.

These Research Fellowships are intended equally for those with limited research experience (who have recently completed or are shortly about to complete a doctorate), and for those who are becoming established scholars in their field.

All Fellowships carry Common Table rights (currently up to £36.00 a week for own meals in Hall), and other benefits, and are open to both men and women. Preference will be given to candidates who have not already held a Fellowship at the same level at another College.

Research Fellows will be elected for three years in the first instance, and may apply for renewal for a further final four years (to a maximum of seven years). Renewal, which is not automatic, is subject to approval by the Governing Body and is considered on the basis of satisfactory progress in research, evidence of adequate financial support for the further term, and, of course, good standing in the College. Those candidates who do not hold a doctorate will be expected to have completed one within the first three years of the Fellowship in order to apply for renewal.

The Fellowships are non-stipendiary. Candidates are asked to demonstrate their financial independence with evidence of their means of support. Where funds are applied for but not confirmed, any offer will be conditional on proof of funding being provided before the start of the Fellowship.

Applications, typed or clearly printed, including a completed application form, a full curriculum vitae (including a full list of publications), and the names of three referees, should be sent to the President's PA, Wolfson College, Oxford, OX2 6UD, by 4 p.m. on the closing date. Candidates should also include details of past research and of the research they will be doing in Oxford. Any additional information relevant to the application should be included in the covering letter.

Candidates should write directly to their referees asking them without further request to send a confidential reference to the President's PA by the closing date. References may be emailed or faxed direct to the President's PA.

For an application form, please send a self-addressed envelope (appropriately stamped for all areas outside the University Messenger Service) to the President's PA, Wolfson College, Oxford, OX2 6UD. Application forms are also available from the College Lodge or on the College website (http://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/fellowships/). The closing date is 4 p.m. on Friday, 20 March 2009. The interview date is Wednesday, 6 May 2009.
