Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos

(Statutes and Ordinances, p. 404)

Part I

With effect from 1 October 2010

The regulations for Part I of the Politics, Psychology, and Sociology Tripos (previously known as the Social and Political Sciences Tripos) have been amended to include new optional papers which candidates may choose in Part I and to reduce the number of compulsory papers for that Part. All students will still be required to take four papers in total in Part I.

Regulation 12.

The regulation has been amended so as to read:

12. The scheme of examination for Part I shall be as follows:

Section A
Paper 1. Analysis of politics I (also serves as Paper 4C of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos).
Paper 2. Introduction to psychology (also serves both as Paper 4D of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos and as a paper in Part I of the Computer Science Tripos).
Paper 3. Introduction to sociology: Modern societies I (also serves as Paper 4B of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos and as Paper 5 of Part IIA of the Economics Tripos).

Section B
Paper 4. Introduction to research methods and statistics for social scientists.
Paper 5. International relations I.
Paper 6. The development of human society (Paper 1 of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos).
Paper 7. Humans in biological perspective (Paper 2 of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos).
Paper 8. Human societies: the comparative perspective (Paper 3 of Part I of the Archaeological and Anthropological Tripos).
Paper 9. Computer Science 1: Introduction to computer science (Paper 1 of Part IA of the Computer Science Tripos).
Paper 10. British economic history (Paper 5 of Part I of the Economics Tripos).
Paper 11. Language, communication, and literacy (Paper 2 of the preliminary examination for Part I of the Education Tripos).
Paper 12. Human geography I: People, space, and geographies of difference (Paper 1 of Part IA of the Geographical Tripos).
Paper 13. Human geography II: Historical geography (Paper 2 of Part IA of the Geographical Tripos).
Paper 14. Human geography III: Society, environment, and development (Paper 3 of Part IA of the Geographical Tripos).

A candidate for Part I shall be required to offer four papers as follows:
(a) two papers from Section A;
(b) two further papers, either one from section A and one from section B, or two from section B.

Parts IIa and IIb

With effect from 1 October 2010

Regulation 14.

The papers available under Psychology within the Social Sciences have been reorganized; a new Paper Psy. 3 'Biological and cognitive psychology' has been included and the current Papers Psy. 3-6 have been renumbered as Psy. 4-7. The last line of the regulation has been amended by replacing the reference to Papers Psy. 4-6 by reference to Papers Psy. 5-7.

Regulation 16(b).

Option (b) has been amended so as to read:
(b) Psy. 1, either Psy. 2 or Psy. 3, and Int. 1A;

Regulation 18.

The regulation has been amended by replacing the references to Paper Psy. 3 and Papers Psy. 4-6 by reference to Paper Psy. 4 and Papers Psy. 5-7.

Regulation 20.

The regulation has been amended by replacing in each case the reference to Papers Psy. 2-6 with reference to Papers Psy. 2-7.

With effect from 1 October 2011

Parts IIa and IIb

Regulation 14.

The section entitled 'Politics' has been replaced by the following section entitled 'Politics and International Studies'. Paper Pol. 5 (Conceptual issues in modern politics) has been withdrawn.

Regulation 15.

The regulation has been amended by removing from paragraphs (a) and (c) the reference to Paper Pol. 5.

Regulation 16(a).

The regulation has been amended by amending this sub-paragraph so as to read:
(a) either Pol. 1 or Pol. 2, Pol. 3, and Pol. 4.
