Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos

The Faculty Board of Modern and Medieval Languages give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2009, the form of the examinations for certain papers for the Modern and Medieval Languages Tripos will be changed as follows:

Part IB and Part II

Papers Fr. 3, Fr. 4, Fr. 5, Fr. 6, Fr. 7, Fr. 8, Fr. 9, Fr. 10, Fr. 11

The examination paper will be the same for both Part IB and Part II, but three questions on Section B will be asterisked and designated for Part IB candidates only.

For candidates taking Part IB, between three and six Part IB individual sub-topics will be named on Section B. Part IB candidates may also choose any one of those questions not marked with an asterisk.

Part II candidates should choose from those questions not marked with an asterisk.

Paper Ge. 12. History and identity in Germany, 1750 to the present

Section A of the paper on 'Theories of culture, society, and the meaning of history' will be divided into Section A and Section B ('From Herder to Engels' and 'From Burckhardt to Meinecke'). The other sections have been renumbered accordingly.

Candidates will be required to answer three questions: one from Section A or B, and two from any of the remaining sections (including A or B). Candidates may answer on both Section A and Section B, if they wish.

Part II

Paper It. 10. The language of Italy

Candidates will be required to answer question 1 and any two others.

Paper Sp. 13. Contemporary Latin-American culture

Candidates will be required to answer three questions, at least one from each section. One or more answers must contain substantial discussion of literature.
