Examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree, 2009: Amendments

The Development Studies Committee gives notice of the following amendments to the notice regarding subjects for the examination in Development Studies for the M.Phil. Degree in the academical year 2008-09, published on 29 May 2008 (Reporter, 2007-08, p. 819).

The following half subjects for examination have been withdrawn from the list of Group 2 (optional) subjects:
32 The political economy of development in Africa
35 Nationalisms, ideologies, and beliefs

The following full subjects and half subjects for examination have been added to the list of Group 2 (optional) subjects:

Full subjects

28 Macroeconomics I (Subject 200 from the examination in Economics): to be examined by means of a three-hour examination.
401 The contemporary politics of Africa (from the examination in Politics): to be examined by means of a presentation, a 2,000-word essay, and a 4,000-word essay.

Half subjects

12 The economics of poor countries (Subject 501 from the examination in Economics): to be examined by means of a three-hour written examination.
233 Quantitative research methods I (RM01 from the M.Phil. examination in Planning, Growth, and Regeneration): to be examined by means of a project and a written examination.
235 Introduction to real estate finance (RE01 from the M.Phil. examination in Planning, Growth, and Regeneration): to be examined by means of submitted essays and a written examination.
236 Urban economics (PGR07 from the M.Phil. examination in Planning, Growth, and Regeneration): to be examined by means of a two-hour written examination.

The Committee also gives notice that the form of examination for Subject 2b - Institutions and development - has been revised, as follows:

For candidates taking Paper 1, this paper will be examined by means of:
either
(2a) a three-hour written examination
or
(2b) a 5,000-word essay and a two-hour written examination.

For candidates not taking Paper 1, this paper will be examined by means of a three-hour written examination (2a).

The Committee also gives notice that the form of examination for Subject 14 - Philosophical issues in economics - has been revised, as follows:

To be examined by means of three 3,000-word essays.

The Committee is satisfied that no candidate's preparation for the examination in 2009 is adversely affected by these changes.
