The Faculty Board of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies give notice that, with effect from the examinations to be held in 2009, the form of the examination for the following papers for the Oriental Studies Tripos will be changed as follows:
This paper consists of three questions: question one contains sentences for translation into Japanese; question two contains a passage for translation into Japanese; question three requires students to write a composition in Japanese. All questions must be attempted.
This paper consists of two sections, containing at least twelve essay questions. Candidates are required to answer three questions, including at least one from each section.

This paper will be examined through a translation project. The translation project will consist of a passage of Arabic of between 1,500 and 2,000 words to be translated into English, together with a brief introduction to the passage and a commentary on the grammatical and stylistic decisions made in translation. The whole project shall not exceed 8,000 words in length, including footnotes and bibliography. Candidates shall be required to state in the bibliography the sources they have used and to declare that the project represents their own work unaided except as may be specified in the declaration. The candidate's choice of passage must be approved by the course teacher by the division of Full Lent Term. Two copies of the project shall be submitted to the Programmes Administrator in the Faculty Office so as to arrive not later than the third Friday of the Full Easter Term.
The course-work that constitutes this paper assessment consists of one research essay, of between 6,000 and 7,500 words, including footnotes and excluding bibliography. Each student will develop the topic of the essay in consultation with the instructor. A one-page topic and paper outline will be due during the first class session of Lent Term. Two copies of the project shall be submitted to the Programmes Administrator in the Faculty Office so as to arrive not later than the third Friday of Full Easter Term.
