Oppenheimer Research Fellowship: Notice

Applications are invited for an Ernest Oppenheimer Early Career Research Fellowship to be held at the University of Cambridge in Colloid Science as interpreted within the fields of biology, surface chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology. These Fellowships are intended to provide an opportunity for independent research, though the holders usually work in collaboration with an established research group. Applications are encouraged from men and women who have completed or expect to have completed a Ph.D. Degree by 1 October 2009, as well as from those who have spent a cumulative total of not more than three years in postdoctoral research.

Tenure is for three years in an appropriate Department, commencing normally from 1 October 2009. The stipend range for 2008-09 is £25,888 to £33,780 (pay award pending). A contribution may be made towards travel and removal expenses, and up to £10,000 a year will be made available for research expenses.

Applications (on paper) should reach the Secretary of the Committee of Management, School of Physical Sciences, 17 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX, by 23 January 2009, and should be accompanied by ten copies of:

(a) a curriculum vitae (no more than three pages) including academic career, qualifications (with class of degree and position in course as x/y), any relevant teaching experience, and a list of papers published and in press;
(b) two statements of up to 1,000 words each, describing respectively the applicant's previous and current research, and the proposed research programme;
(c) the names, addresses, and email addresses of two persons (only) who would be willing to give a confidential assessment of the applicant's research to the Committee of Management, at least one of whom should be an external referee; candidates are requested to ask their referees to write direct to the Secretary by the closing date;
(d) the written approval of the Head of the Department in Cambridge in which the applicant hopes to work;
(e) a completed form PD18 (available from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/pd18/).
