Telephone Network Directory – Use of Lookup Service: Notice

The next edition of the Telephone Network Directory is due for publication at the beginning of January 2009.

Extension users will be aware that over the coming year they are being migrated to the new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) system with its new phones.

As at this stage of the project the majority of extensions will be on the old system whilst an ever increasing number are on the new, it has been decided that information for the alphabetical list of names at the back of the directory should come from a source common to both systems. It is therefore proposed to use the Lookup Service provided by the University Computing Service. Details on this service can be found at http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/lookup/.

Telephone extension users are therefore required to complete their own personal page on Lookup by 31 October 2008. Everybody with a University Common Registration Service identifier (CRSid) has a personal page on Lookup.

Where members and staff of certain institutions are unable to access Lookup, either because extension users do not use computing facilities and therefore do not have a University CRSid or their institution is an associated external body, then special arrangements will be made to gather the necessary information in some other way.

The Telecommunications Office urges departmental and College administrators to impress upon their colleagues that unless an extension number is shown against a name within Lookup by 31 October, then that name may not appear within the back of the printed directory in January.
