Merton College

MERTON B.C.L./M.JUR. LAW SCHOLARSHIP

The College wishes to advertise the Merton B.C.L./M.Jur. Law Scholarship to assist a candidate of outstanding academic excellence who will read for the Bachelor of Civil Law (B.C.L.) or the Magister Juris (M.Jur.) at the University of Oxford from October 2009. This Scholarship has been made possible by the generous donations of Merton College alumni.

The value of the Scholarship is £15,000 for the year. This award is tenable only at Merton College. The successful candidate is guaranteed an offer of single graduate accommodation at Merton College for the duration of the B.C.L. or M.Jur., the cost of which will be met by the student. Selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence.

The competition is open to graduates of any university who have been accepted by the Faculty of Law to commence the B.C.L. or M.Jur. in October 2009. Applicants should apply to the University of Oxford in the normal way, naming Merton College as their first choice College. Applicants should also send an email to the Admissions Officer at Merton confirming that they are applying for the Scholarship (email admissions@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk). Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their University application.

Candidates may apply for this Scholarship in conjunction with the Barnett Bequest if they fall within the selection criteria for both awards. However, a successful application to this Scholarship will be taken into account when assessing the Barnett Bequest as one of the criteria for that award is financial need.

Candidates who are not successful in their application for the Scholarship will still be considered for a place at Merton. The files of candidates who are accepted by the University, but to whom Merton does not offer a place, will be redistributed to other Colleges in the usual way. Should there be no suitable candidate among applicants who have nominated Merton as first choice, the College reserves the right to award the Scholarship to any other candidate sent to it for consideration by the Faculty of Law.

The application form for the B.C.L. and M.Jur. can be found on the University of Oxford website (http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/postgraduate/apply/forms/). The closing date is 23 January 2009. Any queries regarding the Merton B.C.L./M.Jur. Scholarship should be addressed to the Admissions Officer, Merton College, Oxford, OX1 4JD (email admissions@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk).
